Been experimenting with and trying to find a decent high refresh-rate 1080p monitor that plays nice with windows XP, but haven't had much luck.

I've tried 4 different monitors so far of different brands and eras, ranging from 1st generation G-Sync 144hz monitor to a modern 360hz displays, and none seem to work "properly" with XP. Either it can't support the full range of resolutions or it's stuck at 60hz, or both as was the case with my Asus ROG Swift PG259QNR.

The two best of the lot so far has been an 144Hz Acer Predator XB270H, which has no trouble pushing 1080p@144Hz in XP but is restricted to a handful of resolutions, and a 270Hz Asus ROG Swift XG279AQM which handles ALL resolutions above 800x600 without problems, but is locked to 60hz.

Has anyone stumbled across one that actually works properly, or found a way to force proper detection of supported resolutions and refresh rates?

You need a bit of customization to get it working and there is no guarantee that it will work or be stable. What GPU are you using?

Yes, I should probably have mentioned that. 🤣 I'm using a Titan X with modded 355.98 drivers.

I'm not familiar with powerstrip, how does it differ from setting custom resolutions through the nvidia control panel? (which has not really worked)

Ok, powerstrip is mainly for older cards. For the Titan X, get the latest version of CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) that supports XP. It should be able to read the EDID information from the video card and help you make the custom resolutions using the settings the monitor expects.

What output on th Titan X are you using? Are you using any adapters to connect to the monitor?

I'm curious as to why you'd want to use a 1080p monitor in Windows XP, irrespective of the high refresh rate requirement?

My research indicated that most Windows XP-era games were not optimized for widescreen. And user-created widescreen patches mostly only work on Windows 7 64-bit and above.

Maybe you're more interested in TV and movies, but Windows XP isn't the best OS to watch those on, if you care about the best quality.

Maybe you just want more screen width for productivity software purposes. But a 16:10 1920x1200 monitor can provide that as well, and also scale beautifully to 1600x1200 for 4:3 gaming.

I may be missing another use for 1080p, and I'm always willing to learn. Hence the question about your particular use-case.

Timeline for resolutions (PC)

Widescreen support became semi mainstream around 2006, but my experience was that it still was rather janky despite being on the market since 1995.

I bought a new widescreen in 2006 and my year old video card didn’t want to support its resolution without extreme effort, very stupid.
Was like trying to use dvi early on and having to rma the video card twice.

I mean it's not really "irrespective" since widescreen is inevitable for high refresh rate monitors. They don't exactly exist outside of 1080p, 1440p and up. 😉
Sure a CRT is the "holy grail", but not always the practical or even feasible choice, due to size, weight and availability.

On the subject of Widescreen and XP, that's where things get interesting.

It is true that early XP-era games were predominantly aimed at 4:3/5:3 screen resolutions, but the XP-era as a whole was a very long one, due especially to the poor reception of Windows Vista (XP wasn't dethroned as the dominant OS until 2011, by Windows 7). As such Windows XP actually ushered in the widescreen era of gaming and around the mid 2000's games started actively supporting those resolutions and towards the end of the 2000's widescreen support was pretty much guaranteed.

Some notable examples are F.E.A.R., Quake 4(support added with official patch), Prey, C&C3 Tiberium Wars/Kane's Wrath, X3: Terran Conflict, Empire Total War, Mirrors Edge and Arkham Asylum, just to name a few, many of which also support Hardware Sound and Creative EAX.

Maybe that helps demystify things a little? 😀

No, adapters, straight displayport-to-displayport connection. AFAIK windows XP itself doesn't support the EDID overrides CRU relies on, like Vista and later do.

Early XP wasn't widescreen. Mid and late XP era were almost always doing 16:10/16:9 on desktops and laptops, because of the market flood of HDMI-equipped widescreen TVs, multimedia laptops with DVD drives, and Windows Media Center desktops, in 2006 and beyond. I know because I was there and using/selling the systems and monitors, when the screen transitions happened.

With Titan X, to get high refresh going - you need to unlock bandwidth limitations on digital outputs (165MHz+ mode).

It's not quite what I'm talking about though. 😀

I'm talking about communications issues between Windows XP and modern monitor EDID, which results in monitors seemingly randomly(but probably due to manufacturer shenanigans) exposing or not exposing a limited set of resolutions AND/OR refresh rates.

Aka:

Monitor #1: Limited Resolution Set, goes up to 144hz no problem.
Monitor #2: Full resolution set, locked to 60hz (regardless of HDMI or DP).
Monitor #3: Limited resolution set, locked to 60hz.

Etc.

In a nutshell I'm looking for a 1080p monitor made in the past 10 years that will both run 144Hz over DP and expose ALL screen resolutions, without a fuss.

You'd likely have some luck with older FreeSync monitors, as that was originally a DP thing and many of the new ones are only HDMI FreeSync. I use an Asus VG328QA1A, which has FreeSync on both HDMI and DP, using the same DP version as your Titan X and I use a GeForce 1060, which is of the same vintage as your GPU.

I know there is firmware patch for Maxwell+ stuff up to Pascal for DP 1.3 support :

Like I said, I don't believe it is a bandwidth issue.

As already mentioned, I have an 1080p G-Sync monitor with a TN-panel that will do the full 1920x1080@144Hz without a fuss, with the only issue being that its limited to a small set of standard resolutions beyond 1920x1080, which are 1600x900, 1024x768 and 800x600. Likewise I have a more modern G-Sync that does the exact same resolutions, but cannot be set to anything else than 60Hz refresh rate, regardless of set resolution.

Unfortunately no, it's something I've already tried, and wonkyness persists even with DP 1.2 screens that i've tried.
