Just the Via Vinyl AC97 driver. It came on a CD for industrial motherboards and I just let it search for it, the chip is a Ciruss logic though.

This i810 board is the only one I have that runs this Voodoo 4500 at 66mhz PCI.

Resurected my 29 year old front yard "Halloween display" controller.

This was a DOS PC I setup and started using around 1997 (at least that's the date on most of the files) to drive a display we set up in our front yard every Halloween for many years. The display included:

About a dozen hand carved pumpkins (at least 2 were "giant"s) with controllable
lights in all of them, and LED "eyes" and speaker in the two biggest.
A spider on a motor which would go up/down at various times.
A coffin that would open/close at various times.
A skeleton with LED eyes that "jiggled" at various times.
A Raven what would fly back and forth across the front yard at various times.
Spotlights to highlight certain things at various times.
Plays spooky sounds and shows various halloween pictures on a large monitor we
would put in a front window.
Pumpkins talk back and forth (Light goes OFF and Eyes light when talking), telling
spooky jokes, making Halloween oriented comments etc.
+++ probably more than I've forgotten

In the last 10 years or so, there have been far fewer kids in our rural neighborhood and we stopped spending the 2-3 days it took to get it all set up and working.

It wasn't a dedicated PC, I actually used the system I originally developed ImageDisk on, which often got used for "other stuff".

I sold that system (it was a very good ImageDisk system) about 5-6 years ago and didn't think about the Halloween display (I thought we were done with it)

A few years back a friend who had been big part of "the production" moved into town and lives in a neighborhood with lots of kids - so this year I just got the idea to recreate the system. I thought I could do it with my P3 DOS Desktop (it has a Sb16, serial and parallel ports used to control "the yard") - but it turns out the "CSHOW" utility I had used to display the pics fails on a faster machine!

Fortunately due to ongoing requests to support ImageDisk I had made up a system with a second identical P1 mainboard: Re: Windows 95 on a Breadboard

So, I dug through my boxes, found an SBpro. stuffed it into the system. I also still had the interface box I had built to control all of this stuff from the PC parallel port, and was able to find a backup of the control software - and it all seems to work!

For anyone interested, here is more detail on how the system worked:

It started with "CAM" a BASIC interpreted I had written so that a close friend who had a young handicapped child - this had all kinds of special interfaces so that he could build "learning stations" for his son:

1 - Standard PC keyboard and video display
2 - A separate Four-button input keypad
3 - Beeps and melodies via the PC speaker
4 - Sound input/output via a "Sound Blaster" card
5 - Text-to-speech via a "Sound Blaster" card
6 - Infa-red "remote" control of external devices
7 - Analog knobs, dials, levers etc.
8 - Digital I/O via "parallel" port.
9 - X10 "Home Control" devices via CP290 interface

I basically wrote the Halloween display controller in this dialect of BASIC and used it to control the above mentioned devices in my front yard (HALOWEEN.BAS is 172 lines)

Just spent the last couple of days figuring out how the password works on the Toshiba T4700CT laptop I just got - it's an ex corporate one that used to belong to Rover Group, the defunct UK car company 😀
It had a "Password = " prompt on boot and I learnt the hard way that there's no easy bypass to the password on these Toshiba T4xxx series laptops, it instead uses a small serial EEPROM on one of the boards, connected to the PCMCIA controller gate array of all things.

Since it's not the only Toshiba T series I have, I ended up getting 3x passworded EEPROM dumps and two clear ones, then figured out how to read the password out - it's stored unencrypted in there as keyboard scan codes! Potentially once the chip is read out, it's quite trivial to then enter the correct password and clear it like this:

I bought Babylon 5 season 1 and 2 dvds from thrift store. So past few evenings I've been back to 90's. My daughter walked by and asked what year they were made, and I bluntly stated late 90's early 2000... later at the end of the episode copy right noticed 1993 , so again I felt bit older 😢...
Now I just have to reach out Neil from rmc and ask if he knows what hardware was used to render 3d scenes 🤪

So, if I understand correctly, you have a motherboard with an i810 and probably an ICH2 southbridge, likely a Cirrus Logic CS42xx codec, and it works for you in a Windows 98 DOS box with a VIA driver?
I thought you had a VIA codec (VT1xxx), which is why I was curious.

That is exactly the kind of artefact I like: HDD intact?

We should never look at personal data but the data of Rover? Surely, that data could have very real archival value. And, there shouldn't really be personal data on a corporate laptop although HR records are a risk.

Your laptop dates from when Rover was owned by British Aerospace, and that makes it even more interesting - that is the era when Rover released new models that scared BMW and triggered the whole German takeover (they also rebadged Rover cars in USA as Sterling although that didn't end well). I imagine the content is encrypted but if you can find anything at all it may add a nice museum value: Rover Group word template, calendar of meetings with British Aerospace, etc. Maybe contact British Motor Museum and ask them if its okay to look inside, and if they are interested?

From Season 2 onwards, they'd switched to faster PCs and workstation farms for rendering. The quality of the special effects from then on is noticeably better.

Yeah, this wasn't uncommon back then with how fast PC hardware was improving, but I doubt they redid all the 3d assets and scenes they reused from season 1, likely just imported them from LW3D for use with the PC render boxes.

The general composition of our FX shots, including camera moves, are dictated by the feeling of a scene. If JMS writes a big action scene, we'll move around a lot to convey that mood - if the scene has a somber tone, the moves will be slower to reflect this. Everything is dictated by story - a swooping camera move just for the sake of it can very easily draw your attention to the effect and away from the story - something we have no desire to do.
Interestingly enough, big swooping camera moves aren't something we can do very often for a good reason: you have no points of reference in space. Next time you're driving around, look at the clouds. using only them as reference, it seems as if you're standing still - even at 120 MPH! Now let's move into space, where your only reference are stars and planets - it doesn't matter how fast you move the camera, it's going to look as if you're standing still. In addition, without the background moving, if you move a camera past a ship it tends to look as if the ship is moving, which is why you will almost never see a shot of the camera moving past Babylon 5.

All this is why we tend to bank the camera a lot (twist it from side to side) - it's a way of adding camera motion to the scene without bothersome perspective problems!

Are Macintoshes used in the production?
Even though the Joe uses "another" platform, the show actually uses many! Macs have been essential to the creation of the show from the beginning. Even farther back, the Amiga and the Newtek Toaster were employed.

Currently we use Pentiums and Alphas for animation, Macs for Editing, Matte paintings and Compositing, and SGI's for Compositing and titling. If that isn't platform independent, I don't know what is!

The arsenal looks like the following-
Alphas for design stations serving 5 animators and one animation assistant (housekeeping and slate specialist). Most of these stations run Lightwave and a couple add Softimage. VERY plug-in hungry. PVR's on every station, with calibrated component NTSC (darn it, I hates ntsc) right beside.

P6's in quad enclosures for part of the renderstack, and Alphas for the rest, backed up 2x per day to an optical jukebox.

Completed shots output to a DDR post rendering and get integrated into the show.

Shots to composite go to the Macs running After Effects, or the SGI running Flint, depending on the type of comp being done, and then to the DDR (8 minutes capacity on the SGI).

Boy it sure sounds easy! The only problem is, we have a killer schedule and very picky producers, and ESPECIALLY picky viewers! 😀

It is, however, a bunch of fun!

I thought you had a VIA codec (VT1xxx), which is why I was curious.

Yeah that's the gist of it. Maybe the cadenza driver I found would be better? But I'm just happy this project has sound, just a decent little spare Lan party box.
