Really hoping anyone can lend some advice and maybe a solution to this one!
I've been modernizing after a crashed old HDD. So currently running as follows:
120GB SSD on a Pentium MMX 233 (Gigabyte GA-586HX rev 1.55, 430HX/PIIX3) through a JP103-5 SATA-to-IDE adapter, chip marked "IDE/SATA D0F B74KZ0441". I've seen this same adapter in use by our good buddy Phil.
Enabling DMA on the drive in Device Manager hard freezes on reboot. I have to restore from a backup or repair registry to get back in.
Again, I've seen Phil from Phil's Computer Lab use this adapter. I thought he confirmed that it works fine with DMA for him. Tried an 80-wire cable, no change. Board has no UDMA option in BIOS to disable, just PIO Auto, so nothing to toggle there.
Also tried a StarTech IDE2SAT2 (Marvell chip). Separate issue there: it won't detect the SSD and my native IDE CD-ROM at the same time, even on fully separate channels and cables. Someone else on a 430HX board reported the same cross-channel interference with a Marvell adapter in an older thread here.
Unfortunately, no open PCI slot—all 4 full (NIC, S3 Trio64, Voodoo 1, USB card)—so a PCI IDE controller card isn't an option right now.
Has anyone actually gotten a SATA SSD running with working DMA (not just PIO) on a 430HX or 430VX board? Curious whether this chip specifically has known issues on PIIX3, or if anyone's seen the same JP103-5 board behave differently unit to unit.
Thanks so much!
