Hello

I just got my hands on a Vaio RX (PCV-RX540) series. It's not intended to be anything but a nostalgia build (had one of the RX desktops back when it was new). Right now I'm basically cleaning everything, then do a new build using a recovery cd.

I had a few questions about what I may want to do. Although I had this series of computer in high school, I wasn't into computers back then, so I'm very beginner level when it comes to socket 370.

I am thinking of doing the following:

  • Upgrade the CPU (Currently I have a Pentium III 1200
  • Potentially upgrade the cooler (Any ideas?)
  • Add a GPU as there wasn't one (The previous owner most likely used onboard graphics)
  • Potentially add a sound card

For the CPU cooler, would just replacing the fan be more than enough or are there after market 370 socket coolers I can try?
Are there a couple of GPU's that are considered the "best" option or pairing for a Pentium III?
Anyone have a Sony Vaio that they'd modded in any way?

No, it's ASUS TUSL-LV. I tried looking it up yesterday and today but could only find ASUS TUSL-L (OEM) which is close to what mines is.

So if its more like TUSL

- the fastest CPU is P3-S 1400MHz
- RAM up to 512MB of fast CL2 modules
- stock cooler looks not bad but you can use any copper-based model
- ATI Radeon 9600XT not so rare and have nice compatibility with W98/XP
- sound... its discussion point depends on OS and compatibility of what you want
- RAID SATA card and USB2/FireWire controller

It's a combination of both ASUS TUSL-L (OEM) and ASUS CUSL2-LV in terms of layout and connectors.

Looking at the code in my SIV utility a TUSL has a AS99127F and a CUSL a AS99127 SIO sensor chip, I wonder what SIV will report for it, please will you try it?

To do this simply download the latest SIV release, unzip the files and assuming Windows 9x run SIV32L.exe then ideally do Menu->File->Save Local to generate the save file and post it so I can check.

If it's running W2K or later use SIV32X.exe. Both boards are unusual as they have a multiplexed SMBus and as a result many utilities are unable to report the DIMM SPD data and/or SIO sensors.
