Hi everyone,

I'm Daniel, also known for the Doom modding page Realm667 and a certain amount of more or lesser knon mods for Doom. While concentrating mostly on that scene, SimCity 2000 has stayed with me for decades, and I've been working on a personal project in the past weeks to bring new possibilities to those familiar cities: Reticulating Splines.

It's built on OpenSC2K, the open-source reimplementation of SimCity 2000. Huge thanks to Nicholas Ochoa and the OpenSC2K contributors—their work is the foundation that makes this project possible.

The idea is to keep the classic experience while giving you more ways to enjoy it:

  • Import graphics, music and sounds from your own supported SimCity 2000 copy.
  • Add atmosphere with day/night lighting, weather and seasonal effects.
  • Explore larger maps, additional building tools and quality-of-life improvements.
  • Customize your experience with mods and alternative graphics and audio.
  • Keep things classic by playing with enhancements disabled.

Don't own the original? Optional replacement graphics and audio let you play without original game assets.

This is still a work in progress, and I'd love help testing it. My personal estimate is that the simulation is around 99% faithful to the original—not a measured compatibility guarantee. Experienced players who can spot unexpected behaviour would be especially helpful.

Multiplayer is currently in beta and under active development. Please expect rough edges.

I'm not a programmer by background. I provide the ideas, direction and testing, and use OpenAI Codex to help implement the additions. I want to be open about that and give proper credit to the people behind OpenSC2K.

Screenshots, features and the GitHub project are linked here:

If you try it, I'd love to hear what feels right, what feels off, and which city you brought back to life.
Dan

So you took an existing open source remake of SC2000, spruced it up with AI and now expect people to fund it? I went to the website and was immediately hit with an intrusive pop-up asking for donations.
Your opening paragraph says you've been working on this "in the past weeks" yet you've already spent several thousand euros?

Well, according to the license rules there is nothing wrong with giving people the opportunity to support the project by donating. And yes, the current input is arund $ 2.500 which happens quite fast if you are working with OpenAI Astra in High-Mode to get the ideas properly integrated.

There is absolutely no need to donate, I do not force anyone, the project is free to download. You "can" if you want to support, you don't have to.

And I can already tell you, it's not simply "spruced up", it's quite a bit more complex in terms of concept and realization 😀 Feel free to give it a try!

As a long time fan of Simcity 2000 I think this looks very interesting, especially the graphical enhancements.

I'm not that familiar with OpenSC2K and while checking that project many features seem to overlap. Beyond the graphics and network play, what is the features that is special to this project?

All OpenSC2K features are included as Reticulatung Splines is a fork.

What makes this project so special is actually the environment and weather effects which are generated to build upon the graphical existing style of SimCity2000. I think this can be considered as a SimCity2000+

The river in the screenshot looks very nice! I like the improved graphics.

I've tried v.0.3.0-rs.4 on macOS 27.0.1 and imported the graphics file from the DOS-version of Sim City 2000. The game works but the graphics are grey scale and the menu items don't show up (they show number 1 to 18). Also the console displays error: "ERROR: Parameter "version" is null.

One of the things I liked of Sim City 2k were the serious\demential newspaper articles, how is the support of them in this reimplementation compared to OpenSC2K?
How is it the support for localized versions of the original game?

AI-assisted fork of an AI-written reimplementation based upon the work of sc2kfix. If you want to play an open source version of Sim City 2000 just use sc2kfix.

You AI slop bores me.
Hoping to get my PicoIDE soon.
