I was just having one of my contemplations: such a shame CIF had been ditched before the Radeon line and no backwards compatibility was considered, because that would've been something else fun to experiment with on my 8500.

Strangely enough Rage128 by the ATi specifications should have 3DCIF support, but even there it was canceled at the late 1998 or early 1999.
So far latest 3DCIF cards are Rage XL AGP ones,by the time Rage6 (Radeon) came, 3DCIF was long gone. 8500 is good card, supports TruForm.

Exactly the reason I got it, along with its solid Direct3D support helpful in covering several other turn-of-the-millennium bases exceeding my Voodoo's future-proofing.

Looking for Rage XL AGP cards and do not know what to pick?
If you dont fancy the looks, you can take these L shaped ones.
640x480 looks clean to me and it supports up to 1600x1200.

ATi Rage XL AGP 8MB 64bit, all have Rage XL 66702 rom (vga bios)
109-66710-01 : has 2000 written on pcb and has different colors.
109-66700-01 and 109-6670-00 look more twin brothers to me.

Some 109-66700-01 have reg2 chip in place and others missing it.
My 109-66700-00 also has reg2 and my 109-66700-01 have not.
I have seen those ATi Rage XL AGP cards with 6ns and 7ns memory.

ATi PN to look for, any 109-667xx-xx will do (all good)
109-66710-01 (newest)
109-66700-01 (middle)
109-66700-00 (oldest)

Someone that is looking all ATi Rage 2/3 Tweaker Tools!
Some settings change need pc restart, like 15/16 colors.
Rage2 Rage3 Tweaker and Development All Working.7z

Rage Pro Tweaker 1.0
Rage Pro Tweaker 1.1
Rage Pro Tweaker 1.2
Rage 2 Tweaker (+needed runtime files - working)
Rage 2 Tweaker Developmental Options (Rage2/3)

----------------------------------------------------------------

15-Bit High Color (RGB 555) 32,768 / 16-Bit High Color (RGB 565) 65,536 colors.
I usually use 565.bat and 555.bat to change color depth for ATi Rage 2 and Rage 3.
565/555 bat makes automatic restart as they need restart to activate the change.

By default ATiRage uses 15bit 555, even if desktop window show 16bit high colors.
I use those in my win9x with ati.ico and shortcut to my desktop to change quickly.
This change does not change OpenGL, seem its for D3D, ATi 3DCIF and DirectDraw.

Please remember some games and some demos like 15bit 555 and others 16 565!
16bit 565 look better and for any glide wrapper use 16bit 565, it also faster there.
I hope this helps to change setting quicker and its smaller, its in my driver update.

(it should work well, make backup of your system.ini to be 100% safe, thank you)

ARx2611x3Dxl=ARx2611x3Dx2 updated, it has 3Dfx and 3Dgl (two similar drivers).
WinG 1.0 API added, Desktop shortcuts added and 555 / 565 Color Depth is added.
555 / 565 settings change needs restart and those make also automatic pc restart.

Driver installs atidbg.ini automatically and MultiTexture is enabled by default now.
Default OGL and Bilinear Off is also at desktop for quick OpenGL settings changes!
Bilinear Off is still fastest, but MultiTexture enabled is faster than default Bilinear.

2 colors (monochrome) now possible to use, but only at 640x480, just like 16 color.
16 color needs restart and also 2 color mode,ATi drivers support 8, 16, 24, 32 by drv.
Actually it supports 8, 15bit 555 and 16bit 565 high colors, plus 24 and 32 true color.

XLDVD.bat / Rage23.bat could also to be added to the desktop @ shortcut if needed.
XLDVD.bat is for ATi DVDv1 or ATi DVDv2 if you own RageXL and want DVD playback.
If you do not use DVD, then it probably not needed at all and default atid32ad.dll ok.

Core files are all the same in the driver, you get working 6 x shortcuts and WinG api
List of WinG games : https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_WinG_games
OpenGL is the faster v1073, but i can recommend also v1091 and from newer v1100

Updated ATiDVD,no need to install ATiDVD Player/ATiMMC Control Panel separaetly

No need to install ATi DVD CP later
Added ATi DVD Player Control Panel!
Its at Start-Settings-Control Panel

Install ATi DVD @ setup.bat to get
ATi MMC Control Panel also for DVD

Since you have been finding ways to improve on the Rage 3 drives, is there any chance you could take a look at this? I'm not sure if it's even fixable. These early Rage cards have a problem in 8-bit color mode where they produce a slightly corrupted display along horizontal lines.

It's easiest to spot in Sim City 2000 (any OS). You just need to be in 8-bit colors.

Thanks, its visible in 8-bit colors also if you move the gamma slider low and high multiple times at the ati control panel and color menu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its strange that in older ati driver control panel you have more options than newer. Atitask i have changed with some files, there it is ok.
Control Panel menus need more file changes and i have spent view hours today without no luck at the moment to add more drv options.
Why to lower the options at the same menu? Newer has also gamma and colors, but no save and no keyboard hotkeys available anymore.
Older ATiCP3 already added with Scheme, but i would like to have ATiCP1 extended options available to 5.3x and 5.4x,there they are gone.
Atitask cant save profiles, there they can also be changed if control panel is closed and profiles are made before, default is always available.
Keyboard hotkeys are also working if they are saved before, at least in desktop they change on the fly for your selected gamma and colors.

1024x600 desktop resolution is working with all Rage Pro cards and its added,RageXL dont have it and i dont know why it is like this there.

Some rarer versions have multitexture enabled by default, like 1071/1073, i will change default settings so multitexture is off there as well.
Default GL will be slower and different looking for these OGL also and we are missing 1071, at least we have 4.11.1073 that works well@Pro.

Install atitask-atiicon first with driver, then ATiDVD and MMC ( with that order ATi Programs will not be empty, like added Older ATi CP pic)
At least ATiDVD and ATi MMC will be detected and added there and they are installed to the ATi Multimedia folder at C: Program files folder

Small change to the ARx2611x3Dxl.7z + Added new AtiInfo (optional)
Added 864x480 resolution + Mfg text was missing from inf,now back

Better compability with newer AtiInfo.exe
atiicdxx.dll / atricdxx.dft files are changed

ATiInfo needs 5 files, but as ati driver has atiicdxx.dll and atricdxx.dft
There are 3 new files needed to use it at working + compatible driver

Default OGL setting works now also for OpenGL 4.11.1073 (atidbg.ini)
One less file for both of the ARx2611x3Dxl.7z drivers, gl=106 / fx=110

Bios:
Some ATi OpenGL likes AGP Aperture size at 32MB, like 1091 (faster)
Also 4.11.1091 is better for Quake1/Quake2 menu and game@ragexl

Adapter info tool is already there even without Atiinfo.exe

Here visible old and new ATiInfo comparison.

Re: Is there any way to improve the VGA output for early ATI Rage video cards?

Its the same on Mach64 VT2 and for me its more hardware issue than software, used stock and open source drivers for quick testing. Even on emulation its there, when there is no hardware acceleration.
Added here 1 Demo and its splash screen has that issue, its spacedonuts. Donuts.exe always defaults to 640x480 256 if without commands and 640x8.bat is the same. From 16, 24 and 32 its gone there.

Its seems here you got more accurate answers about this

I dont own any ATi Rage 3 (Mobility) , is this info correct or its inaccurate?

Motion Compensation (MC)
ATi Rage Mobility-C - Ultra-Low power core with 4MB integrated SDRAM
ATi Rage Mobility-EC - C model with Tv-out,also 4MB integrated SDRAM
ATi Rage Mobility-CL - Like EC with Tv-out, has 8MB integrated SDRAM
ATi Rage Mobility-L - 4 to 8MB with restricted 32/64bit memory speeds
ATi Rage Mobility-M2 - Refined revision with integrated 8MB (MC only)

Motion Compensation (MC) and iDCT support
ATi Rage Mobility-P - Up to 8MB external SDRAM/SGRAM (iDCT decoding)
ATi Rage Mobility-M - 4MB integrated SDRAM (hardware iDCT decoding)
ATi Rage Mobility-M1 - 8MB integrated SDRAM (hardware iDCT decoding)

XL/XC do not have iDCT, they to me seem have Motion Compensation.
Or i dont know how to enable it, someone has Rage 3 working @ iDCT?

Hi, apologies, but this post is going to be quite long.

A few months ago, in another thread about games for the ATI Rage Pro, I discussed overclocking my card and hitting a wall with the memory clock speed at 118 MHz. I’ve spent the last few evenings wrestling with the card BIOS, trying to bypass this limitation, and I think this is the right place to share my findings.

In short, my card is an ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x (P/N 109-49800-11) with 8MB of 7ns SDRAM. Its original BIOS bears a sticker labeled "RGPRO AGP 49801 101," and I believe the BIOS I’m sharing here will work with cards bearing similar markings.

A very important note: ALMOST ALL ATI RAGE CARDS USE WRITE-ONCE BIOS CHIPS! If you want to make changes and the markings on your BIOS chip start with "27...", you will need to purchase a rewritable chip—specifically a Winbond W27C512P or an SST 27SF512 (in the PLCC32 package).

I’ve successfully decoded the original BIOS, which now allows for the adjustment of memory timings. The "3D Rage LT Pro Register Reference Guide" was essential for this; I checked several similar documents, but only this one contained the "MEM_CNTL" register—which controls memory operation—that actually corresponds to the Rage Pro cards. I’ll skip the finer details to keep this post concise (though I’m happy to provide more information if you need it).

Results: The original BIOS is configured with CL=3, tRCD=3, tRP=3, and tRAS=6 (settings significantly less stringent than I had assumed).
As a test, I applied the settings for 100MHz CL2 (as specified in my RAM's datasheet), which resulted in a measurable but very slight performance gain in 3DMark99—an increase of about 20–30 points.
I also experimented with even looser timings in an attempt to break past the "magic" 118MHz barrier, but to no avail. Numerous adjustments to other settings also proved ineffective.

During the process, I tested several versions of PowerStrip and Rage Tweaker; I managed to modify "Tweaker 1.2" to allow for clock speeds exceeding the program's hardcoded limits of 115MHz (for memory) and 105MHz (for the core). I have included a modified `rage.dll` file, to apply this change you must replace the existing file in two locations:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellExt\Rage.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Rage\Rage.dll
The provided file raises the limits to 150MHz (memory) and 110MHz (core). Please note that I am unsure how this affects Rage II or Rage 128 cards; more importantly, it does not remove the 118MHz limit for the memory.

Removing that specific limit required adding a new function to the BIOS to recalculate the variable responsible for memory clocking (above 118MHz, one of the 8-bit variables would exceed its range, causing a system crash). With this modified BIOS, I managed to achieve stable memory operation on the card at a clock speed of 150 MHz, while maintaining the original timings that came with the card.
The BIOS version with looser than factory timings presents some issues that would require further investigation (though I’m not particularly inclined to look into them, as the current BIOS works fine for me).

Does this provide a significant performance boost? Compared to the factory 100 MHz—yes; however, when comparing results between 120 MHz and 150 MHz... in 3DMark99, increasing the core clock by 5 MHz yields a greater gain than increasing the memory clock by 30 MHz. My test platform only supplies about 3.24V on the 3.3V rail, which limited the stable core clock to 103 MHz (my previous setup allowed for 106 MHz). For these cards, it would likely be worthwhile to use a motherboard—or a modified power supply—capable of delivering a slightly higher voltage to the card. A stable 105 MHz core with 120 MHz memory performs better than a 100 MHz core with 150 MHz memory. Such an aggressive memory overclock only yields a noticeable effect when the core is also significantly overclocked.

I used an Xgecu T48 programmer to modify the BIOS. I’m not sure if it’s possible to perform such modifications on these cards using any Windows based software—I suspect not.

Yes, I wrote about that overclocking in the OpenGL thread—thanks for the reminder.

I expected that it would be possible to overclock these memories more, but I didn't think that it would be possible to overclock this high, I ended up with 150MHz only because it does not bring any further performance increase. I should try bumping the voltage to around 3.45V and see if I can get the core to run stably at a few MHz higher. It wouldn't feel like a record-breaking achievement if the core were running slower than before.

Not so long ago I also bought a Rage XL with 6ns chips, but after a while of trying to overclock it I gave up and put it aside for later, I have the impression that it is an even more problematic card, but with greater potential.

So does this leave room for other Rage3 cards, can they get similar treatment? Like Rage LT Pro, your mentioned Rage XL and Rage Pro non Turbo? XL AGP i also have with 6ns, but at the moment i did not find my regular Rage Pro Turbo like yours, probably need look better and my pc finally wants new Win9x install. Great to have some improvements and nice discovery! Even only faster memory timings are good to have with performance increase. The more info you share , the more better it gets, Thank you again.

I think the easiest thing is with ATI cards, for which you can find a dedicated document "Register Reference Guide", which is a BIOS manual for a given card model. With this document, you can decode all settings from a card's BIOS dump, including those related to memory timings or clock speed management.

I haven't found such a document for the Rage Pro or Rage Pro Turbo. While working on modifications for my own card, I assumed that the Pro and Pro Turbo are equivalent. The "3D Rage Pro Graphic Controller Specifications" document identifies which cells within the `MEM_CNTL` register contain information about specific timings, though it doesn't specify which binary values correspond to which settings (I’ve attached an image).

Since the cell addresses match those of the LT Pro, I concluded that the structure must be identical. However now, looking at the register documentation for the Rage XL, I realize I might not be 100% correct—while that card also shares some of these specific variables in the same locations, the rest of the register map differs quite significantly. It’s hard to be certain without a document specifically for the Rage Pro registers, but I still believe the LT Pro is a closer match than the Rage XL. If anyone have Rage Pro Register document, I would love to see it.

Initially, I thought I could handle the modifications on my own, but after running into issues, I decided—with some skepticism—to try using the free version of Claude. Working with this software to solve the problem was quite a pleasant experience and I think the 118MHz limit issue was too complicated for me to fix on my own, even with help it took a lot of attempts to solve the problem. If the memory limit also occurs in other ATI card models, I think I could easily fix it now.

Rage.dll used and it unlocks higher clock options in the Rage Pro Tweaker menu like you told.
From my side bios waits right ATi 109-49800-11 cards to show up or i buy another for cheap.

If I want to buy a RagePro (Turbo) AGP card for my Celeron 333 which one should I go for? Are there bigger differences? https://www.pc-schnulli.de/hardw/gkagp/gkagp_ati.html There are 8Mb SDRAM and SGRAM Versions. Don't know if chip/ram are always 75Mhz. If it's not 100% possible to tell which card to go for, perhaps it's easier the other way around which card to avoid?

thx!

EDIT: Just found this. https://www.vgamuseum.info/index.php/cards/it … rage-pro-agp-2x
