Hi all, i recently bought a nice condition classic Packard Bell system off ebay and i want to change the video card! It is using a crappy onboard 1mb Cirrus Logic 5430 😖 This is probably one of the worst performing PCI video cards for Dos!

Anyway i no longer have any spare PCI video cards so if anyone feels like getting rid of one then please let me know 😀 I am looking for a 2mb or 4mb PCI card using either an S3, Matrox or ATI video chip!

Many thanks, Dan 😎

Sorry, I've got a whole bunch of spare, decent 3.3V AGP cards, but the only PCI is a Cirrus Logic GD54M30. I'm not sure how well it performs. I will have to try it out sometime.

(Probably undesirable, it seems every 2 pixel rows the vertical column gets darker. I'll have to really look at the card to find the problem.)

Currently I've got two S3 Trio64V+ cards up for grabs. If you're interested, take a look here.

Thanks for your replies!

@5u3
How much do you want for one of you S3 cards? and also what would postage be to the UK? Is there much of a difference in performance between the 2mb and 4mb card or does the extra 2mb only provide higher resolutions?

One more thing... I have also been offered an SIS card over at Amibay but i am not too familiar with the stuff from SIS 😖 I have been offered an SIS 6215.... is this any good?

Yeah i think i will probably go with S3 😎 Voodoo 3's and Voodoo Banshee's have good Dos performance but those cards are overkill for my little old retro system 😁

NVIDIA cards are better than Voodoo3 for DOS. Somewhat better compatibility and still basically infinitely fast. S3 is the only way to go if you want almost sure fire VGA compatibility.

For example, only my S3 Virge works without palette corruption with Terra Nova. The Voodoo3 and NVIDIA cards needed a TSR. Verite, Matrox and Cirrus Logic Laguna didn't work.

The S3 card is free, I only want to get reimbursed for the shipping costs, which would be € 3.70 or € 6.20, depending on how fast you want it. If you're still interested, please drop me a PM.

Thanks for the offer but one of my friends has just given me his old 4mb S3 Virge DX 😎

He has a secret stash of old PC bits that he had long forgotten about... just been re-building an old AMD 386DX-40 system and then i saw the S3 Virge amongst other old graphics cards... I think it should be fine for old Dos/Windows games 😀

I appreciate your offer but maybe your S3 can go to the next person who may need it, thanks again 😀

ooohhh that VirgeDX is a nice card!
IMHO you should keep an eye for a voodoo3 since you have a pentium machine... maybe u will play some glide games? or some games in SVGA mode where a faster card is needed?
ATI/NVIDIA in my opinion offer little to this machine , since they both lack glide...

The S3 Virge is very fast with Dos games compared to the crappy onboard 1mb Cirrus chip i was using 🤣 I don't really need a Voodoo 3 with such an old machine... I have already linked my S3 Virge to my old Orchid Righteous Voodoo 1 for those old Glide games 😀

I don't see anywhere where he said he has a Pentium... only keropi mentions the word. Anyways a TNT 2 card would probably let you play some good games of Unreal Tournament 😄" I could play the first 3 or so levels (up to that 1 on 1 encounter with the pit in the middle) on my Pentium 133mhz with 48mb of ram smoothly.

AMD Ryzen 3700X | ASUS Crosshair Hero VIII (WiFi) | 16GB DDR4 3600MHz RAM | MSI Geforce 1070Ti 8GB | Windows 10 Pro x64.

I mentioned my Pentium system in another thread 😀 I also have a Pentium 133mhz with 48mb of EDO ram and have just sorted out a mouse cursor problem! (also in another thread... the S3 drivers were a bit iffy!).

I won't even bother trying to run UT on my old system as it supposedly requires a P-200mhz and recommends a PII 266mhz! I am amazed that it runs on your P-133mhz! My system uses a 4mb S3 Virge and a 4mb Orchid Righteous 3DFX Voodoo 1. I mainly use this system for Dos games (the main reason why i opted for an S3 Virge card 😀 )
