I know there are 1740's with and without CSP/ASP.
I have an SB16 ASP with the ASP chip soldered on the board rather than socketed. I know that my first SB16 ASP ever (back in 1993/1994?) was like that too.

I also remember being not happy AT ALL with it after a week or so and really regret selling my SB Pro 2 and got that thing. 😀

Why did you like the SB Pro2 so much better than your ASP SB16?

By the way, can anyone point me to a link for downloading ALL the original SB16 install disks for the model CT1740? (yes, including the nonessential applications). How many disks were there...3? 4?

Creative released quite a lot of SB16 cards. I think the CT1740 was one of the first. The general sound quality isn't very good - it's kind of "muddy/unclear". The later ones were better, eg CT22xx, and also the Vibra chipset ones were better too, eg CT28xx. I think the only good thing about the CT1740 is its wavetable header probably isn't faulty with the MIDI hanging note problem, because I think that model had the "good" DSP version.

Yes, the only reason I'm installing the CT1740 is because I need Wavetable daughtercard capability. The PC I'm putting it in, only has one open ISA slot that I can use for my sound needs, so I'm planning to use a CT1740 with Roland SCD-15 daughtercard (I'm also hoping to use the SCD-15's MT32 emulation for titles that support MT32).

In that time, games that supported the sb pro in stereo weren't stereo on the SB 16. The only that was as far as I remember was wolfenstein 3D, but the sound was hissing SO much and clipping SO much that it really spoiled the fun playing it on the SB16.
A lot of games had the problem with hiss and clip.
I paid about 600 guilders (!) for it back then (that was about 300 dollars) and given the above facts you can imagine I really felt screwed.
