I had some trouble finding drivers for my new Voodoo 1. I use DOS mostly but I do run Windows 98 as well. I went to this site http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo1.htm and found some drivers. I tried the Diamond Monster 3D V4.10.01.1600 driver and 98 installed the Voodoo under the category in Device Manager that also has the sound card in. I now have extra options in my display settings in Windows 98 as well. Anyway, I tried running "Asghan: The Dragon Slayer" and Quake from Windows. Quake runs really slowly (unusable). Asghan starts and I can hear the music but the monitor looks like it is trying to display a refresh rate or resolution that it is not capable of. Wavy lines come up and then the monitor goes black. I haven't tested any other games yet.

As I never had a Voodoo back in the day I really don't know much about them or what to expect from them. The system is a Pentium II 300Mhz. Do Voodoo capable games have to be run in Windows or can they be run in DOS too?

Anyway, I am really not sure if I am using the correct driver for 98. Do I need to load any DOS drivers for the card? What games would benefit the most from the card on my Pentium II 300Mhz system?

This is the card I have by the way:

Go to Control Panel, and then I think it's Display, and then I think you can then see extra options for the Diamond card there. What happens if you try the test button? I know there's a test button for that card, after you install that Diamond driver.

I am not at home at the moment. But I did click that test button last night and nothing happened. So do you think I am using the correct driver?

I will try that one when I get home. So does DOS need a driver loaded? Which games would you suggest would be good on a PII 300Mhz Voodoo 1 system?

Presumably you are running a version of quake that can use glide. glquake for example, though i think there are later ones.

In the driver you can sometimes set a splash screen to appear, eg. a full-screen 3dfx symbol or spinning logo to announce the voodoo card kicking in.

Yeah it is glquake. I will have to see if I can set it to do that when it is kicking in. So should my system be able to run glquake well?

Not sure what a Voodoo 1 is capable of but I think it should at least run nice at 640.

Uninstall the Monster3D driver and install the latest reference driver from the site.
To play 3dfx enabled games in DOS you must have glide2x.ovl and I think another file, on the folder of the game. This file can be found with your drivers. No need for any TSRs and such during boot 😁

Actually, the latest reference driver was the one I tried before the Monster3D Driver. With that one installed Asghan: The Dragon Slayer kept saying it did not detect the card. I also remember copying the files manually in to the game folder for one of the games I tried although I didn't know which file so I copied a bunch of them 🤣. Can't remember which game that was though. I'll have another go at things when I get home. But it is good to know that the latest reference driver is definitely the one to use.

I'll report back the results later on. Thanks everyone.

If nothing happened, then either the driver isn't installed correctly, or the card is defective. Have a really close look at it. Look at the tiny pins that surround the chips. Are any of them "buckled", and consequently touching their neighbouring pins? If the card looks in good physical shape, then for some reason the driver didn't get installed correctly.

The exact problem you are describing has happened to me on more than one occasion, testing a couple of Diamond Monster Voodoo1 cards. After reinstallation of the Diamond driver, it worked for one card. Alas, no reinstallation could save the other. It was defective.

I think if you have been installing various Voodoo1 drivers, then the chances are your system has got a bit confused, and you'll be OK once you uninstall them all, then reinstall just the one you really need.

I looked at uninstalling them when I was messing about but there was nothing in the add/remove programs list relating to the drivers. Should there have been something in that list to uninstall the drivers? Or is there a different way to do it in Windows 98?

I tried reinstalling the driver again and this time when I hit test it says it is going to test at 640 x 480 60hz and when I click ok my monitor goes crazy with lots of wavy lines. If I hit escape it stops testing and I get the screen back. Not sure why it does this. Also, I can't see a way to tell it to test at 85 Hz which is the optimal refresh rate for this monitor.

** Edit **
Just found the section in display settings where you can change the refresh rates for direct 3d and glide. It lets me change the refresh rate to 85 for the direct 3D resolutions but when I try and change it to 85 for glide it says it needs to restart windows in order to do so but when Windows restarts it is back at 60Hz again and when I go to hit the test button it says it will test at 640x480 60Hz again and when I do the screen is garbled again.

Could the Matrox Quick Desk program on the task bar be causing problems?

It seems that whenever I try to play a 3DFX game in Windows it does the garbled screen thing like when it tries to test. It seems that the 3DFX control panel will not let me change the glide refresh rate to anything other than 60Hz which make my monitor go nuts.

!!! I am getting really pissed of with this thing !!! 😢

rick12373, I just read another one of your recent Voodoo related posts, and you said:

"When I got home I checked out my Pentium II 300 MHz. It has a Matrox Millennium II in it. The system is working so well that I decided to use this system for a Voodoo 1. Will that Matrox work with it? Or should I switch it for something else?"

Am I correct in assuming that you are trying to get a V1 card working in a system that once had a V2 in it? If this correct, then I feel more strongly now that you have driver issues. If I were you, and I mean that literally, then I would do a clean install of Win9x, on any old test HDD, and just see if you can get the V1 to work. Just to check out whether this thing works or not.
