Edit: Solved. batracio has the answer!
I have just tried the following on three mobos, with three fresh Windows 95 installs! On each attempt, AGP Voodoo5 5500 + reference driver 1.04.00 = "blue screens" during the install process. I am using the unofficial Windows 95 service patch. The reference driver contains the 3dfx Tools utility. Also, prior to installation, I have run IE4 service pack 2, because otherwise the reference installation will not proceed.
Also, if I decompress this reference driver package, and run the setup.exe inside the driver sub folder, which bypasses running the 3dfx Tools installation, I get an instant "blue screen". Any ideas please people?
Edit: I just tried installing the Voodoo3 reference driver. Its installation seems similar to the V5 reference driver installation, because it too installs the 3dfx Tools. And it works. At the install stage where it blue screens with the V5 + V5 install setup, the V3 + V3 install setup works OK.
Edit 2: Actually, the V3 install didn't work. It reboots and gets to the desktop, and simply displays a completely empty desktop with just a mouse cursor on the screen. This is so weird. I've had Voodoo cards working OK in W95 before. I will try another fresh W95 install, but I will not use the unofficial service patch.
