Edit: Solved. batracio has the answer!

I have just tried the following on three mobos, with three fresh Windows 95 installs! On each attempt, AGP Voodoo5 5500 + reference driver 1.04.00 = "blue screens" during the install process. I am using the unofficial Windows 95 service patch. The reference driver contains the 3dfx Tools utility. Also, prior to installation, I have run IE4 service pack 2, because otherwise the reference installation will not proceed.

Also, if I decompress this reference driver package, and run the setup.exe inside the driver sub folder, which bypasses running the 3dfx Tools installation, I get an instant "blue screen". Any ideas please people?

Edit: I just tried installing the Voodoo3 reference driver. Its installation seems similar to the V5 reference driver installation, because it too installs the 3dfx Tools. And it works. At the install stage where it blue screens with the V5 + V5 install setup, the V3 + V3 install setup works OK.

Edit 2: Actually, the V3 install didn't work. It reboots and gets to the desktop, and simply displays a completely empty desktop with just a mouse cursor on the screen. This is so weird. I've had Voodoo cards working OK in W95 before. I will try another fresh W95 install, but I will not use the unofficial service patch.

I've just tried a 4th clean Windows 95 installation, but I still can't get the AGP Voodoo5 5500 to install. I get a "blue screen" the moment I double-click on the 1.04.00 reference driver's setup exe. Not the 3dfx Tools setup.exe, but the setup.exe found inside the win9x driver sub folder. I decided to ignore the 3dfx Tools setup exe, because it requires IE4 service pack 1 or higher. I wanted to keep things simple, and just install the driver only, without the 3dfx Tools utility.

Also, I did not install the unofficial service pack for Windows 95. I installed DX7. That's it. Fresh clean install. I'm using an i440BX mobo. I installed the Intel chipset driver. That appeared to work OK. BTW, the V5 card is working fine. I just retested it on exactly the same hardware, but using a W98 HDD. No problems.

This is really odd. Any tips for getting an AGP V5 to work on Windows 95, using an i440BX mobo would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot.

Don't use any setup program. Let Windows 95 to ask for the drivers (or force a driver update in Control Panel), and select the folder where 3dfxvs.inf file is located.

Thanks a lot, that worked! 😀 I clicked on the "Change" button found inside the Adapter / Display properties area. I then clicked on "Have disk", and it correctly installed the V5 reference driver. Also, I downloaded 3dtx Tools from falconfly.de. It's available as a seperate download. That also installed correctly, after I applied the IE4 service patch 2. Now that I have tested this installation, I will uninstall it, and install V-Control.
