Motherboard: ASUS M2R32-MVP AM2+/AM2 AMD 580X CrossFire ATX AMD Motherboard
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 Brisbane 2.9GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor
Memory: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM
Video Card: GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) SSC+ 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
Sound board: ADI 1988A chipset, 8 channels (built into motherboard)
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Professional OEM
DOSBox version: 0.74
Game: Jet Fighter 3 version 1.22 (according to the game's README.txt, not sure if that means the game is 1.22 or the readme was 1.22)

Problems:
1. The in-game mouse icon will not appear immedately, I have to try a Free Flight (which instantly errors out like in the top half of the attached screenshot) before I can see the in-game cursor icons.
2. Main problem. Whenever I try to play a Mission, whether I start it by clicking the plane in the Hangar or by using the Top Menu buttons, the mission immediately fails and I see the error stuff that is shown in the top half of the attached screenshot. The game then goes to the Mission Failed screen and I can go back to walking around the Carrier.
3. Occasionally (not always) the game will throw me into Free Flight while I'm walking around the Carrier. No idea why it does this, either.
4. Also occasionally while walking around the Carrier the graphics go away and i see the error stuff in the DOSBox window as seen in the bottom half of the attached screenshot, then it will put me back in the game like it does after failing a mission.
5. I cannot view the Military Encyclopedia feature in the Carrier's Library. The screen goes black when I try and I have to hit ESC to go back to viewing the Library and the colors go all crazy for a second. This doesn't cause a crash of any kind, though.

Sound mode: Dunno, not sure how to check.
Video mode: Dunno, not sure how to check.
Steps already attempted to solve the problem: No idea where to even start. I'm not the biggest techie for this sort of stuff, I'm lucky I got the game going in the first place, honestly.

Try other cpu types like pentium_slow or 486_slow

I tried all of the cpu types, same errors. With the same letter/number combinations, even.

Have to leave for a while, but later tonight I'll try all of the combinations of core and cpu type and see if any combination does better.

Here's what was in the 'cw.err' file that it kept creating, if it helps:

Still nothing. I've tried with versions 0.73 and 0.72 and they give the exact same results.

It seems that the files I have for the game are simply bad. I'm getting the same error, character for character in Windows 98 albeit with the absolute memory address missing.

Gonna just repurchase the game on eBay and see if having the actual disc will make any difference.

I did get Jetfighter III working in DOSBox after a while. I had to purchase the actual game disk off eBay (of course including the game manual :] ) and use the install commands I found on a YouTube instructional video for installing a DOS game that had a CD.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkMiTm7Yb_c
- it gets to the relevant instructions at around the 7:16 mark of the video

Using this video as a reference I was able to install and then run the game fine. I also think the files for JF3 files that I'd found online previously were incomplete, which probably didn't help either.

After installing I learned I could edit the dosbox-0.74.conf file to have DOSBox automatically run some commands when it starts up, so I added these lines so that JF3 will just come up automatically upon running DOSBox.

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
# You can put your MOUNT lines here.
mount d f:\ -t cdrom
mount c e:\josh\games\dos\jf3

Now I just have to learn to watch for and dispense countermeasures for the enemy missiles! I've already died alot more in this game than I ever did when I was younger, lulz.

Glad you got it working by legal means. There's an important lesson to be learned from this thread.

Pirwzy,

Using your method, I too was able to finally reinstall JF3 after over a decade, thanks!

My only problem now is that I can't seem to get my joystick working on it. I tried the Logitech joysticks in the Install procedure but they didn't work. I tried a few others but no luck. Any suggestions? And how do I make it full screen?

OK update, I've got the joystick working but my rudder and throttle are reversed in the game, 🤣. I've disabled them for now. Any idea how to make the throttle control the throttle, and same with rudder?

Excellent! That fixed the joystick issue. I am all set to go now, thanks guys!
