I installed DOS 6.22 on this (I think it had DOS 6.1 or something like that originally) and copied over a folder called CPQDOS, which I think contains drivers specifically for this machine (CDROM etc).

I have been messing about with the autoexec.bat and config.sys trying to get a decent amount of conventional memory. I have used QEMM 97 (with and without stealth options) and Memmaker but the most that either of them can get is about 577k. I think the CPQIDECD.SYS driver came with the machine originally and is specifically for the drive that's in there. I am really not very good at managing the start up files at the best of times and this really has me stumped. I have bare bones start up files now which are as follows, they givesme 570k. QEMM 97 is only able to improve it to 577k.

autoexec.bat:

SET PATH=C:\DOS;
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IDECD001
LH C:\MOUSE\CTMOUSE.EXE
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4

config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM
DOS=UMB,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To get the benefits of QEMM you have to replace the HIMEM.SYS and EMM386 lines with QEMM.
An easy way to try this is to run qsetup, make a copy of your current configuration and then let optimize run.

Also something seems to be wrong with the above, can you post a memory layout by piping the output to a text file?
like:
mem /c > meminfo.txt

I had already run Optimize by the way, I just posted my bare bones non-QEMM files.

I don't know what I did but I was going to post a mem txt file with QEMM and without QEMM. But when I ran optimize again it worked way better this time and I now have 634k. I don't think I changed any thing but I am certainly not complaining!

** Edit **

I do know what happened. I didn't load my CDROM driver etc. That must be the problem. I think it is using the driver that came with the Compaq originally which I suppose doesn't like to be loaded high. I will load it in now after the QEMM optimize to see what happens.

It's working now. I really don't know why QEMM and Memmaker were not working before. Thanks anyway.
