what games is korg needed for?
Slot-count is mostly irrelevant as concerns MIDI-connected devices, but, going with the theme of "greatest number of concurrently accessible sound thingies," here is my 486 config:

From what I understand the MT-32 has something like a "limit" in terms of how much it can do at a given time. And this helps the situation I think.

yeah you have a running 486, but i only have an asus cubx and a gigabyte ali5 for an isa platform, both with only 2 isa slots, that's why i am talking about this. 🤣
@Cloudschatze: Quite impressive, especially setting up a 'MIDI network' with redundant devices used for channel splitting 😉
Could you give some sound example where the limitation of a single MT-32 is clearly heard in comparison of using two?
For me, I nice setup is pairing a EWS64XL and a GUS. In addition to the Dream chipset on the EWS64 you can put a wavetable board on it and a external MIDI synth.
The goal is not to cover as many GM synths as possible but to have all of the most common sound hardware standards in DOS combined.
Though thats not a problem at all, since I have multiple systems with different setups.

These are a bit outdated, and can be seen in other posts. The 486 is below the desk, and is not visible in the picture, nor is the CSM-1 anywhere in sight. Bear in mind that this setup is mostly geared towards music-production, and not gaming, hence the redundancy with some of the synths in the 486.
The satellite rack sits on a desk to the left of the main (pictured) desk...

That's basically it - increased polyphony. Similarly, the FB-01s can be configured to respond to either even notes, or odd notes (or both, by default), increasing their polyphony as well.
The older MT-32 units (sans headphone-jack) have buggy overflow-assignment - as has been pointed out a number of times by NewRisingSun on the QuestStudios forum, in addition to a recorded example I provided - hence the split MIDI-channel configuration with these instead, facilitated by the MTPs.

Roland SC-55mkII and AWE with a SCB-55; whats the point? Can't live without the hanging note bug, or no other DB available at the moment? 😜

The XV-5080 isn't used for gaming, nor would I ever suggest that anyone buy one with that purpose in mind.
The 486 has an SCB-55 so it can function as an all-in-one, stand-alone system.
