I'd put it in the MMX system.
The AWE64 was released in late 1996 and the MMX CPUs were released from early '95 to mid '97, so they fit into the same timeframe.

As for the SC-55, try to find the ones that are being auctioned off. You'll have to be more patient, but they can end up half as expensive as the buy-it-now 55's from Japan.

if you don't install the software wavetable drivers (which gave the AWE64 the "64" capabilities), then it will run on a 486... otherwise you do need a Pentium class machine to make it work... without the software, the AWE64 is essentially an updated AWE32

If you're going to use it like an AWE32, then you should use a real AWE32. An AWE64 would be wasted in a 486 if you can't use the features that distinguish it from an AWE32.

The AWE64 has a better SNR and unlike the AWE32, the AWE64 doesn't have the hanging note bug if you use it to drive an external MIDI synth. So there is a reason to use it in a pre-Pentium class machine over an AWE32.

Yea in combination with a SC-55 or other external General MIDI module, the AWE64 is an awesome companion.

I don't think I remember the WaveSynth working on Cyrix6x86 either.

I have a Awe64 Gold in my Pentium 200mmx and I have to say I'm happy with it. Most all my games are 1995+ and I'm not a MIDI junky like some folks here so it fits my bill just fine.

the regular AWE64s have just about the same SNR as the AWE32s because they used the same mixer chips... only the AWE64 Gold was better

well I have an AWE64 Value and it sounds better than my AWE32, (no cracks/pops in Halloween Harry and other tracker based games) but I'm sure the gold is even better.

you must have an earlier AWE32 then because I have one of the later ones that used the same mixer chip as the AWE64.... sounds about the same
