I have a boot disk/OS install image from Toshiba to suit my T3200 portable, but it's a 720KB image to suit such a disk.

The bad news is my USB floppy drive won't write to 720KB floppies. The good news is that my T3200 has been specced up with a 1.44MB floppy drive.

If I open up the disk image in something like Winimage, and convert the image to suit a 1.44MB floppy, then write it, is there any reason that shouldn't work in the Toshiba?

The plan is to install the Toshiba MS-DOS 3.3 to get the system-specific utilities like TEST3.COM and XCHAD.COM, then upgrade to MS-DOS 5.0 using my retail box, so I can use all the space on the larger HDD.

You should be able to extract the contents using WinImage (or even 7ZIP depending on the type of image) and copy the files to a formatted bootable floppy.

Alternatively - try putting some tape over the hole in the corner of the 1.44MB floppy, format it using FORMAT A: /F:720 at the command prompt in Windows, then try to write the image file to disk. I have successfully done this to create 720KB DOS floppies that my Amiga can read using dos2dos (you can usually compress an ADF to fit in 720KB using LHA, then decompress it on the Amiga and write it using TSGUI or similar, if you have no better method of getting stuff on the amiga).

Yeah, I tried putting a real 720k disk in it, this particular USB floppy drive won't touch it. It's a bit weird, Windows just says "Format not supported" or similar.

I'm home now, I'll give it a go shortly.

I can confirm that both my USB floppy bought from China(ebay), and another one a friend of mine has, don't read 720kb floppies.

Hmm, I'm using a Toshiba USB floppy drive, but its probably a good 8 years old now. (model PA3109U-1FDD)
Guess they must have dropped compatibility for the old double density disks at some point. 😒

Mine's a PA3109U-3FDD

BUT!!!

I think I may have just had a bad-luck streak. The 6th DD floppy I tried finally worked, and is installing now! 😀

No, wait, just got the error again. I'm beginning to think Winimage doesn't like Windows 7 or something. The first 5 disks didn't open up in explorer either, though, so it must have been a double-whammy of failure...

If I can remember well, 2 years ago when I had a desktop system with a floppy drive, I had successfully used Winimage to write 720kb disks, both original and 1.44MB ones with the HD hole covered. Nowadays I use a laptop, and that's why I bought the usb floppy drive. I haven't tried to write any DD disks, as just reading others isn't possible.

edit : I think winimage had two options. Write and Format and Write. I remember having problems with the first one, while the second worked.
