I have shiny new Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y. 5 Joystick. It is not recognised by DOSBOX. I think, it is because it is a USB device that is the problem. Can anybody offer some suggestions about getting the stick to work or should I go digging in the trash for my old MS Sidewinder?

Usb joysticks work great in dosbox. Most even better than old port sticks, I think. Dosbox will write in the console window whether it recognizes a stick, so copy/paste that windows contents here.
If it mentions your joystick, you will have to check the settings in dosbox config.
Note however, not every game supports a joystick 😉

Dominis: Well it is promising to know that a USB joystick will work BUT the details you offer don't help me much.

Dosbox does not see my USB stick. When I plugged in my old MS Sidewinder, after scrapping the garbage crud off it, DOSbox saw it immediately, identifying and naming it as it is named in the XP control panel/game controller section. DOSbox config has no switch/flag to indicate the type of joystick ie plug-in or USB.

Maybe you could describe the steps you use to get DOSbox recognise your USB joystick.

in the XP control panel/game controller section there is and option for prefered device. does it help? also maybe remove the old joy from that panel.

Normally you just need to connect the joystick and everything works. As robertmo writes, check whether Windows is using the stick at all.

You might need to give details yourself as we can't tell what system you are using...

Well thanks for all the suggestions. I shut down the computer last night and when I restarted this morning the CYBORG was in the Control panel/games controller section. I don't often shut down for other reasons BUT the Cyborg worked OK on Xwing vs TIE fighter OK before I shut down.

So the lesson here is, REGARDSLESS of the what it is that is we installed it's a damned good idea to reboot after the installation. The old rules still apply.

The DOSbox config shows both joysticks. Not that it is need but I'm leaving the both there to see what happens. I'll running this trial with XWING Collector's Edition.

Will report outcome for completeness.

Wish me luck "and may the force be with you 😉 "

OK the outcome. XWING works with both joysticks BUT the CYBORG wanders if the Sidewinder is attached. Disconnect the sidewinder and the CYBORG works.

The Sidewinder was marked as the prefered Joystick. I just unplugged it. I am yet to try changing preference setting. I get back to you on that.

Dominus suggested that a USB stick worked better than a ported joystick. The performance may be subject to the game. In XWING the CYBORG is not as responsive as the ported stick. It is slow to move the craft and slow to stop the craft moving. The ported stick does not do this, well I didn't notice that but it just seemed slow. It the craft moved as soon as the stick was move but it did not move quickly.

I will perform a more comprehensive test on the ported stick. Of cause CPU, cashing, memory and Video driver all have an impact. So bare this in mind when I get back with the test report of the MS sidwinder.

Well, aside from the fact that the broad-sides of barns are all safe from destruction. I tested both sticks in the XWING Combat Training Maze and I did better each time I used the Sidewinder. It seemed to me that the CYBORG F.L.Y. 5 was 'jumpy' in comparison to the Sidewinder Pro.
I have both joysticks registered in the the Control Panel/Game Controller and the earlier problem I have when using the CYBORG that being it wandering across the screen was because I did not have a 'prefered joystick'. Thanks to Robertmo for making that reference.

I am enjoying playing the game again and I will certaining try others.

BTW has anyone when playing PRIVATEER and just playing to kill, maim and murder been offered a tumble in the hay by the captain of a trading ship you are about to blow to smitherines, if you don't blow them away???
I played the game over and over and this scenario never occured again.

Are you testing that with same speed of the same spaceship?

I did the tests in the Xwing trainer. I always made the attempt to complete the course as quickly as I could. With the CYBORG I found I had to line up the targets earlier and if I was off line on the first target it was unlikely that I would be able to correct the line to hit the next target. This did not seem to be a problem with the Sidewinder.

I also noticed that the slow reponse of the CYBORG to the Sidewinder caused me on several missions to crash into other objects. For instance, I had in the past when being chased by another player flew directly at a container or other ship and at the very last moment pulled out. The result was the attacking player would either crash into the object or would have to manouver away giving me time to escape or to swing around and nail him while his was sorting himself out. I don't play any other flight sims I can not make further comparisons.

On another note, I still can not get TIE Fighter to recognise either Joystick and in WvT, I can not get past the "select what you are going to be screen". I can not press either select Rebel or Emperial buttons but the Exit programme button works a treat!

i think your problem may be cause of that the new joy allows making circles while your old allows making squares. Circle joystick doesn't reach corners so don't gain max speed in corners. check how it works in control panel test.
