The S switch will not let you use Roland. You need the R switch for that. If you are wanting to have MT-32 music, you won't have the digital sounds. The MT-32 may have some sound samples in lieu of the SoundBlaster sounds, but may not be what you expect.

ScummVM allows you to use combinations of configurations that are not normally possible, like the DOS General MIDI with the Windows high res dialog images in KQ6. You may be able to combine the Roland MT-32 music with the SoundBlaster digital sounds in MI2. ScummVM has Munt built into it, but you will need the ROM files, which I assume you already have.

BTW, you can use Munt with the official build of DOSBox by installing the driver or using the Munt QT app. One of the Munt developers, sergm, has a 0.74 build of DOSBox that has Munt support without all of the other experimental patches.

okay here is the general conf for dosbox and the one used specifically for mi2 through d-fend

remember hat through dosbox the game sounds almost perfect except for some missind sfx.
through d-fend there is no sound

That config is a mess. This is my last time reminding you that you REALLY should watch / study and learn from my video tutorials 😁

And this is not meant to be rude, just that I get the impression you are looking for a quick fix rather than wanting to learn about the basics of DOSBox so you can fix things yourself.

sbtype=none is likely the issue.

I have attached the conf and prof files of my D-Fend Reloaded Monkey Island 2 profile.

hey guys, back.
@collector the build i have also has munt support from sergm.
@oldbie Ive tried multiple variations of the conf file for MI2 including all sbtypes and set mine exactly to match yours with still no sound (only disturbance at the beginning of where sounds and music are supposed to happen)
still stumped
if certain dosbox general conf options are different than the dfend reloaded game conf, will that matter?

You can just use sergm's DOSBox build or install the Munt driver.

https://github.com/sergm/munt_devel/downloads

If you install the driver, you will need to select Munt for your MIDI device, either the system's device or set it from DOSBox, midiconfig=2 (change 2 with the right number for Munt on your system. Can be determine with "mixer /listmidi" from the DOS prompt in DOSBox). You can also try the QT app.

@collector i should have downloaded sergms build in the first place thanks the sound works now through d-fend.

now, the game does have the mt32 sound yet it still is missing the sound fx during the copy protection. and the paintball that splatters when you choose between the full and lite versions of the game sounds weird (in scummvm the splatter sounds as just that but here it sounds really digital)

Could you be more specific?

One thing that is unfortunately a fact is that with the MT-32 option many sounds don't exist. For example the sound of the bar keeper cleaning the mug or the bat sound when you visit the Voodoo lady.

Now ScummVM solves this by playing Sound Blaster sounds in this cases. So it plays MT-32 and Sound Blaster effects.

And that's why you should never use ScummVM as a reference as they often add features that the original didn't offer, which is great, but can confuse some people who will then look for a solution to a problem that isn't a problem in the first place.

So one last time:

Don't use ScummVM as a reference to compare how something plays / sounds / looks

That's because ScummVM isn't an emulator but basically an adventure engine interpreter.

lame... hmm maybe i will just have to keep scummvm as i have a few other games now that are compatible. just wanted to consolidate.

@collector you made it seem like munt would be able to do both things or integrate or something. were you just saying that it has mt32 support?

@mau1wurf
in your version of the game does it have the clicking shuffling sound as the copy protection shuffles through pics? also is there a splatter sound when choosing the full or lite game?
Im guessing it does if you are just using soundblaster

Otherwise thanks alot guys seriously big help
gained some dosbox knowledge along the way

Could not agree more. This is why, except for a couple of exceptions, I strongly prefer to use DOSBox over ScummVM. Some times they force their modifications as defaults, such as when they first introduced their anti-dithering to SCI0 games. At first to view the original graphics that the games' artists had created, you had to manually edit the ini with an undocumented setting. Audio for AGI games default to Amiga sound. In general, it is FAR easier to get the right sound in DOSBox.

Munt in DOSBox will not do anything more than what you could do with a real MT-32 and a real DOS PC.

i was reading some other posts and they talk about lapc-1

I sent you a PM.

There are quite a few variations of Roland MT-32 compatible devices. Many games only sound 100% accurate on certain modules.

MT-32 (Old): Old games and most Sierra/Dynamix games
LAPC-I, CM-32L and CM-64 for newer games and Lucasarts games

The LAPC-I, 32-L and CM-64 support 33 extra sound effects. On the MT-32 (Old) no sound is played in such cases.

Monkey Island 2 sounds different on these modules. I am pretty sure that the LAPC-I, CM-32L and CM-64 modules are the ones to use for this game. Differences are easy to spot with all the spitting sounds and the chef slicing food behind the bar.

Some Sierra games had separate drivers for digital sounds and music. This allowed MT-32 music with SB digital sound. There are also some Sierra sound drivers that have the SB driver appended at the end of the MT-32 driver that gives both SB digital sound and MT-32 music.
