Hello

I'm trying to get the original Command & Conquer (its Readme says: June 1996, Version 1.22) working on a fairly modern computer.

Without VDMSound Version 2.0.4, using either windows or command prompt, the sound "drops" out for a split second about every second. It sounds somewhat like an old scratchy record, with loud somewhat regular pops. Graphics work fine.

With VDMSound opened with Windows explorer (by right-clicking), game
loads very, very slowly. Graphics also load very slow, sound is very broken
up.

With both VDMSound and game run from command prompt, graphics and
sound are identical as running game without VDMSound.

The above situations are consistent, they happen every time, all the time.

(I did read the README.)

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

* Processor type and speed Celeron 1.8Ghz
* Amount and type of RAM 384MB
* Video board w/ RAM amount and type Nvidia G-force4 MX 440, 64MB
* Sound board Realtek AC97 Audio
* Operating system Windows XP

* Sound mode used When I installed the game, I clicked "Sound Blaster"
which produces the settings: Port 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1. I tried changing IRQ to 7, the installation hung.

Dan, the "pops" you hear, are they similar to this: http://www.jabba.dk/files/WC3_and_SB-16.wav

The pops from the C&C game sound similar to the ones on the .wav file. The game pops are somewhat louder in relation to the regular sound, and just a bit further spaced apart.

But let's assume that they have the same cause. I'd be interested in trying any fixes you know of.

That "Guest" above is me. I didn't know I needed to log in.

Fixes ... That's the big problem. The only work-around (and not a 100% at that) is to not use SB-16 or SB Pro emulation, just plain 8-bit SB. Or, use SoundFX instead of VDMSound. More info on the game (Wing Commander III) that I have problems with here: Crackling sound in Wing Commander III with SB-16 emulation.
I am somewhat happy that I am not the only one with this problem.

I'll try out some of those options.

Thanks for the tips.
