SC-8820 received today and dissected:

I like it so far, been testing it with tilakat's GM fixed games (dn3d and dooms mainly) to hear the differences between sc-55/88/88pro , the cool button on the front changes maps without resetting the unit 😀

Nice catch!

A word of caution about the A7M266-D.
I used to have one as well and these are known to have been suffering from bad capacitors due to the Capacitor Plague (a very interesting story on its own 😊)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
Have a look and if you see a bulged capacitor that looks like this do not plug the motherboard in power. You might damage the board and other connected components. From the picture you posted it looks fine but its worth having a closer look.

I only see two or three capacitors on the A7M266-D that need replacing. Two Teapos to the left of the Northbridge, and possibly one more at the top of the board behind the I/O panel, specifically the one right behind the two USB ports. The rest of the caps on the board are Rubycons and Fujitsus. The Teapos have different vents than anything else (three converging diagonal lines with three dots in-between each line.

Is there a rule to this? My impression is that you should go after the big ones (in size and capacity). The little ones don't seem to "pop" that often so to speak 😀

I wouldn't call it a rule, per se, but I'd say that's a fair assessment. I generally don't bother with the ones under 470uf, unless I have some particular reason to think they may be bad. The smaller ones like that don't tend to be quite so critical, nor are they usually under a lot of stress, so it's fairly uncommon for them to cause problems.

Note that I'm only speaking of motherboards and such, though. Power supplies are a different matter... depending on the circuit design, the small caps in those can cause all kinds of havoc (up to and including runaway voltages that fry everything in the system).

I picked up a pair of boxed Cirrus Logic VL Bus cards with manuals for about $11 each that had been preying on my mind for quite a while. You really don't see many VL bus cards for that price any more let alone ones that are complete in box. They're probably good to sit on until the time is right to resell them.

Have the same board and CPUs but no PSU. Aux out PSUs are a bitch to find.

I'm fairly certain the board will work fine with the normal and 12v power lead.

But might be the memory when i think about it...

the chipset requires 266/333 ecc/reg ddr ram if memory requires. I use 4x of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390179786178

I tried 400MHz memory and thought the board will clock it down automatically.
I used to have 4x 1GB Corsair DDR memory which i sold with my Dell Optiplex GX280.

Well the ram I linked runs cas3 @ 400mhz. But it auto clocks down to cas2 for anything slower. You will not find better (stock) performance ram for ecc/reg. And honestly, I think 2gb is just right for a board limited to 4gb. you lose 1/2 a gig to pci devices, another half a gig to video card... 4x 512 fits nicely and is appealing to my OCPD.

I think one of the soundblasters has an asp chip? Nothing particulary special about the soundblasters except non-pnp and scsi, pretty sure these have the buggy mpu-401 unfortunately

That Digigram PCX20 I plan to run in a 386 rig to see if can get .MP2 audio files working as I think thats the supported format would be pretty cool alongside the mpeg decoder card!

I thought I hit paydirt with that Midiman winman but from what I can tell its useless for dos! I did'nt get the midiman portman in the same auction but thought I would put it here for discussion as I also think its useless for dos, whats the verdict toss or keep them?

The real treasure obviously is the Boxed Roland SC-7 and should alone have sold for at least $100!

The other kinda rare item is the 50pin 4X CD-BURNER, perfect for my AM5x86-160 VLB system or perhaps the cyrix 5x86-120? hmmm decisions decisions.

Part of the haul was a Roland keyboard that has no inbuilt speaker cant remember the model threw that out, about 7 or 8 programmes for creating midi music so I threw the lot out but kept about 25 floppy disks as these are getting harder to find.

My brother lives about 2.5 hours away so he picked it up and arrived for christmas so you can guess what my present was for chrissy 😀 ? The lot for free! Thanks Bro!
