I followed the guide Windows 3.1x DOSBox Guide to set up Windows 3.1 mainly because I have a stack of old CD games that only work in 3.1 (not 95, not XP, etc...) I want to try out. I started with the latest SVN build, and it worked great for getting into windows and just messing around a bit. However, every game I tried would crash after a couple of minutes. The Daum build seems to play the games just great, but I have to use the et4000 machine, because despite changing everything I could, the S3 machine results in a big black box instead of the mouse pointer in Windows. I've tried the drivers on Vogons Drivers page, I've tried drivers from Google searches, and I've tried the legacy driver from the S3 web site. I would much rather use the S3 machine as it allows me to set Windows to 1024x768x32 which closely matches my native LCD display (1366x768,) setting it to black bar the sides, that means there is no resizing going on. The T4000 limits me to 16bit up to 800x600 and 8bit above that.

The guide specifically mentions the S3 as working fine, so I'm assuming that the mouse is a pointer and not a big black box. Attached is the config file and an image of the problem.

My current system:
Windows XP SP3 32bit
Intel 2.4G Duo-Core
4G Ram
AMD Radeon HD6670 2G
Soundblaster X-Fi

soo, mouse works fine with official svn but black with taewoongs built?

Pretty much. I mainly use taewoong's for 3DFx games (Tomb Raider Gold being the only one right now.)

So, there are two things to do:
- report the games that die after some minutes with normal Dosbox SVN - best check against 0.74 whether the problems were there as well. Also mention where you got the svn build from.
This is the most important thing which you should have done right away. The devs need to know such things.

- contact taewoong that his built screws up the mouse pointer in Windows 3.x and s3 mode

Well, I figured out the problem with the games crashing.... They are all QuickTime games, and going through your guide to refresh my memory, I re-read about not using stock .74 and getting the SVN. I'm getting a newer SVN (from your link to be precise,) because I don't think I've updated mine in quite a while. Not since CGA Composite mode was integrated I believe. I'll also download the latest Daum and try that. I had assumed that I had done something wrong somewhere.....

Testing....Testing.... OK, the new SVN no longer crashes my games, but the latest Daum still has black box instead of the mouse. Also made another discovery, going to change to different S3 drivers, because for some reason, in my high color game the S3 gives some rather weird color pixilation. It does this in both the SVN and in Daum. It isn't so bad if I lower from 24 to 16 bit color, but its still there. Going to cycle through different versions of the driver and see if any of them help. Also sending Daum a message about the mouse.

Well Ack!!! The "minor" pixilation issue is present in all drivers. I think it's a problem in the game itself. The major problem only occurs when I'm in true color (24 bit) mode, and the game manual actually states that there will be graphic anomalies in true color mode on some cards, and to just drop it down to 16 bit mode.

The black box mouse has completely disappeared on me. It's working great now for some reason... The only thing I did was drop the vram size from 8 (max) to 2 (max the drivers can actually take advantage of,) and turned on aspect ratio (so it wouldn't stretch the image to the full 1366 width.) I've tried and tried (even changing those values back,) to get the black box back (for troubleshooting purposes,) and I still keep my mouse pointer.... go figure.

Well, I have it finalized finally. Everything seems to work just great in both DOSBox versions (main & daum.) Though, it seems as if Daum runs a little smoother/faster. Not sure.
