Hi there. I'm trying to run Creature Shock on DOSBox 0.74. The problem is, it doesn't have sound. I posted in a wrong forum, here's my old post:

Creature Shock doesn't have sound

Hi there. I'm trying to rum Creature Shock on DOSBox. I tried modifying every setting in the configuration file that I could think of, like changing the soundboard, adjusting the cycles to 40000, using gravis ultrasound instead of soundblaster, adjusting the irq, dma and hdma, etc. The problem is not the sound itself, it's the fact that the game doesn't detect any sound board in DOSBox. When I open the configuration file, the soundboard and the midi device says "UNDEFINED". And, when I install the game, both from windows and from inside DOSBox itself, it algo says "Soundboard: None" and "Musicboard: None." I do believe that if I can specify in the configuration file the type of soundboard, I could make the sound work, but I don't know how to do that. Any ideas? I'm using DOSBox 0.74, I have a core 2 Quad Q6600, 4 GB of RAM, and a N560GTX video card.

so I'm posting here (thanks, truth5678). Here's what truth5678 told me:

-First, try another game to test that sound is working via dosbox

Done that. I've run Crazy Drake with no sound problems whatsoever.

-Second, slow down the cycles a lot to verify that sound board detection is not hampered by high cycle count (set cycles=15000)

Done that, too. Tried also 40000 (like another post says) and auto. No effect.

-Make sure it isn't abandonware software, too, because that may cause an issue.

I don't know if it is abandoned, but Creature Shock is in the game compatibility list of DOSBox games, as %100 supported, from version 0.72.

-Here are the suggested sound settings: Sound - SoundBlaster 16 (A220,I5,D1)

Done that, too. It still doesn't detect any card at all.

-Music - GeneralMIDI (A330)

The configuration file doesn't explain in detail how to configure midi sound, so I'd ask if anyone can show how it's done. I don't know how to configure to General Midi, the explanation of the configuration file doesn't explain it, nor does the manual.

-This means you would also set IRQ=5 in the dosbox.conf file. See wiki for dosbox.conf for details on these settings.

Could anyone direct me to this wiki, please? And I don't understand wich IRQ is meant in that last sentence.

Default DOSBox settings.
cycles=40000 - Game will crash if set too high.
Run INSTALL.EXE
Sound Card: Sound Blaster 16
Music Card: Sound Blaster 16

I don't know if it is abandoned, but Creature Shock is in the game compatibility list of DOSBox games, as %100 supported, from version 0.72.

What this means is install the game from the original CDs. Not something download from a website.

Hi. Long time no see. I could perfectly make the game work, because I had the most, biggest, and dumbest problem: I had to use the UP and DOWN keys to select the type of installation, the music card, the sound card, etc. The autodetect DOES work, I just had to select it. I guess I got too used to windows games, that detect automatically all those things. That was the problem! Because the last two options are highlighted under a frame, I thought I couldn't select the upper ones. What a dumbness!! The game works perfectly now. Still, thanks a lot!!

P.S.: Also, I put the cycles to 40000, and there the game worked too. The problem was that I was putting just "40000", instead of "fixed 40000". That was a dumb mistake also. Now it rocks!
