Hello everyone,
I am thinking of selling all my retro gear, except 1 main retro rig, 1 main backup set of hardware and one older system.
This involves about 4-5 AT cases, 7-8 cpu/mobo/ram/vga/sound card/i-o card/HDD sets ranging from 386SX, DX, 486DX, DX2, DX4, Pentium, Pentium MMX, K6, Cyrix MII and Pentium II/III, Voodoo1, Voodoo2, Voodoo3 2000 etc, some SB 16 etc cheapo sound cards, ISA and VLB controllers and several working HDDs ranging from 40MB to 10GB.

I think about keeping my beloved baby AT system which consists of: [photos here: Re: post up pics of your "computing area" ]
--> PIII 750 slot1 | 256MB SDR | Voodoo3 3000 | SB0060 Live! | HDD 80GB | slot1 baby AT mobo | PCI usb 2.0 | AT case w/modified MHz display | Hitachi 19" flat CRT | Windows 98SE to play all the Windows 95-98 games (w/glide) I want and others that don't play on XP or newer OSes.
[modified MHz display info: Re: Creating a new LED MHz indicator for my PC's front panel! [PROJECT] ]

and also one backup set consisting of:
--> K6-III 400MHz ss7 | Voodoo3 2000 | SB0220 Live! | HDD 80GB | DFI P5BV3+ mobo

I also want to keep one system for DOS/Win 3.1 stuff:
--> P120 socket5 | 64MB EDO | S3 Trio64 onboard | HDD 3GB | Desktop case "Digital Venturis FP" | Panasonic 14" CRT

But everything else has to go...
Maybe I'd assemble as many PCs as possible, set them up, configure them and load them with every software that I have and try to sell them locally.
Or should I just put them on the basement?

I want to stop gathering all this old gear and focus on the actual software/games/experience with them! 😊

What do you think? What would you do?

Acer Helios Neo 16 | i7-13700HX | 64G DDR5 | RTX 4070M | 32" AOC 75Hz 2K IPS + 17" DEC CRT 1024x768 @ 85Hz
Win11 + Virtualization => Emudeck @consoles | pcem @DOS~Win95 | Virtualbox @Win98SE & softGPU | VMware @2K&XP | ΕΧΟDΟS

I think many have reached this point in the past or will at some point.

IMO don't sell. If you have the space, pack everything up. They will only gain value and in a few years the retro bug strikes again.

If you want to sell, your passion isnt vintage computer i suppose. Why did you start building in the first place? Then you should only wasting time and money..

But if i can speak for my self. I wouldnt sell my stuff till i die. Why? Because i have enjoyed back in the days i was a kid.. And it made a big impact on me. (and always loved the old computer system)
I only can be angry on myself why i wasnt earlier starting living on my own, so i could collect much earlier.. But iam still happy with the results i have been reached by now.

If your intrests are gone, sell the stuff.. But be aware you never going find it that easy again. I think this would a big decission, if it would be a good choice.

But if you have the room for it, then i would never sell it.. But if you want to use that room for other purpose, or your intrests are gone, sell the stuff..

As a kid I didn't have such a PC. I'm fascinated by old stuff, I really like to learn how they evolved (hardware, software, OSes, gameplay etc), but I don't think that all this gear helps more than having 1-2 rigs.
I also don't think that old PC hardware will cost a fortune in the future because of mass production. I don't want to keep for example a 486 VLB system which cost me today 50€ because in 5-10 years it will cost let's say 150€. I don't think it's worth it.

Ok, it was really big fun to have the opportunity to set up and run a 386 class system, but now it's done. All the things you can do on such a system are better done on a 486 etc etc... So the actual system just takes space.

Mau1wurf1977, I want to sell now because I don't want to be striked back by the retro bug again! 🤣 All I want is to enjoy old software and games on the old hardware I'll keep rather than playing with hardware, something that I am doing until now.
I have the space in the basement, but...

Then i think that this hobby hasn`t been laid off for you. But i see it the most times that people that born much later in the 90s or 2000s dont have any intrest anymore.. (because they that didnt lived in these days, and likes the newer stuff likely more)

I know what you mean. I have played more retro games under DOSBox. Way more.

At the moment I prefer working with the hardware. Sometimes I'm a bit over it and then I just shut the door to my lab and let it be for a while. But it will never disappear 😀

All my gear is nicely packed away and organised. Ready for the next project to begin. Currently I'm working with Voodoo cards and this will keep me busy for a very long time...
