Core2s are considered pretty old these days.

However, I do have a core2quad extreme which runs at 2.98 Ghz, the fastest core2 processor available for 1st gen systems and performs pretty well. I'm with tayyare. My main rig used to be based on the Asus P5B. Upgraded from my C2D E6300 to an E7600 last year. Upgraded to a current motherboard and CPU last month, but I still love my old system. Used that motherboard for nearly 8 years. =)

Mine was (and still is) P5Q Premium with Q9550 since 29.09.2009 😈 Only upgrades are a bluray player (2 months ago) and Asus ENGTX560 1GB (from an ENGTX250 512MB on 23.04.2012) before that. The rest are all the same, since the day one. Ah, and I upgraded XP to Windows 7 last summer.

I have no intention of changing them in the forseeable future, either. 😎

Yeah I also just upgraded to a Core 2 Duo E8400 3ghz and 8GB ram. It makes me worry a bit that some people are calling it retro. 😒

By at least 4 years considering those who only use the latest things were moving over to core i5/i7 back in 2010. Still good enough for today's needs if you tweak everything right.

My main platform is also Core 2 Duo,Asus P5Q motherboard,Core 2 Duo E 7400-2,8 ghz overclocked to 3,8 ghz ,6 giga ram,PowerColor HD6850 with 1 giga ram also overclocked.Runs everything fine,thinking of getting a ssd for it,folowed by a better videocard and later maybe a core 2 quad.

It's kind of crazy the core2's came out almost 9 years ago. It certainly doesn't feel like it, especially considering the gap between K6 and core2 duo. Honestly, multicore shows how lame programmers have been about it (especially in regards to games). I swear I read something about the Titanfall game using uncompressed audio to run faster on older PCs; not to mention the recent Battlefield sequel running on core2 architecture. I just can't remember a K6 or pentium 2 being usable for games of 2006 (let alone 2003). Am I seeing $hit?

If you look at the last few iterations of Windows (Vista, 7, 😎 there haven't been many changes in hardware requirements. I find that I can run Windows 7 fine on just about any Core2Duo based system. It was such a big step up from P4 (in my eyes) that now Intel is deliberately slowing down progress. What's the difference between Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge and Haswell? Not much at all! I thought we'd be seeing much more powerful CPUs by now. I think Intel is just taking advantage of its current market position and cashing in on that.

Don't understand why higher density and faster speed is going to improve a PC with its current design. It is an utter waste to make higher density and faster speed. When you talk about fast memory access, you need to consider why CPU cache is so much faster than external system memory. If you compare the cray super computer to todays PCs, you'll see what I mean.

Why hardware designs don't implement better memory architecture is beyond me. If cpu cache was the system memory, then you'd be on the right track. There's tons of cpu power wasted because of the retarded (literally) system memory architecture. CPUs in their current state, always have to travel across a bus to access system memory in real-time; and that same bus is accessed by GPUs, sound cards, wifi adapters, HDDs, USB, etc. CPUs would be way way fast if cache was the main memory instead. Much less waste of silicon (and way more speed) had there been a better architecture by now.

If you've taken Computer Science courses in networking, you'll know why a bus topology is slower than a star topology (especially a hybrid star-ring topology); especially compared to a mesh topology.

Definitely, progress in hardware seems to be coming to a grinding halt. At least this gives programmers the chance to better optimize their software though, that is one thing I hated about the late 90's - early 2000's. Everything was just more and more power hungry and for little or no reason, it made it so I basically just stuck with my old computers (not that I had any choice) and kept using the same utilities and programs I already knew ran on my computers. Hell I still use Office 97 to balance my checkbook. 🤣

My main system is a Q6600 with 4GB DDR2 800. 😊 So I have to say, nice "retro" system!
