Doom 2 stuttering sound

Hello, all. First, I'd like to say VDMSound is an awesome program, allowing me to play most of my DOS collection again. Keep up the good work! 😀 And, I've also used the search function for this problem finding no solutions.

But I've run into a few problems along the way. With Doom II (actually, the whole Doom trilogy; Ultimate, II and Final), I've played around with all the audio settings; with the CPU usage slider, trying all types of sound blaster in the pull-down menu; nothing seems to work. Every time a sound effect occurs (gunshots, enemies growling or whatnot), the game slows down and stutters until the sound stops. No problems with the music.

I've tried running the game with no sound and leaving music on, and it works great, but how could you play Doom without sounds!? 😁

My specs:
Windows XP Pro SP1
AMD Athlon 2800+
512MB DDR RAM
GeForce4 Ti 4200 w/ 8X AGP
nForce2 chipset w/ built-in sound

Nicht Sehr Gut or DosFreak: have either of you gotten the Doom series to work well with SFX? I've read the thread where you guys have 4 pages of posts helping with Redneck Rampage, and thanks to that, I've gotten that series to work. Redneck Rampage & Route 66 stutter just a tad, but at least it's playable, and Ride Again works *beautiful*. I got all games to work with the cutscenes and all, so thanks for the great advice!

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Why not trying some windows port of some kind for playing DOOM? 😎

I've downloaded the shareware version of DOOM 95, and I installed it. Runs perfectly. 😒 So, worst case scenario, I found the DOOM Collector's Edition for $10 at my local wal-mart, and I'm buying it this thursday. I noticed it includes DirectX 8.0a, so those must be some improved sound drivers. 😀 So I hope that'll work and that's that.

I've been aware of the windows ports to the games, but for nostalgia, I'd like to keep playing the DOS versions. I'm a freak like that, I guess.

By the by, I have the same stuttering problem with the Heretic/Hexen games too. Thank you so much Microsoft for making DOS emulation so much crappier for XP. Boo! 😒

I personally use jDoom. A great port (although the player 'scale'/FOV seems out to me?). It supports 3D models and high definition textures 😀

So much for the Doom Collector's Edition! 😀

I tried out that Doomsday program which has jDoom, jHeretic, and jHexen in it, and it's pretty solid. I thought it would look stupid, but the glowing fireballs and glowing health bonuses in Doom are actually a nice touch. I also recommend it:

I started playing Blood recently, and got stuttering sound in that too. Yay. So I used this guy's method's that everyone seem to be pointing at:

http://www.deathmask.net/buildxp/

And guess what; it works.

You don't NEED the same exact directories as he has, just be sure to have VDMSound fully updated, NOLFB, and CLI2NOP. My new best friend is CLI2NOP. I used his patching techniques for Blood and it's Cryptic Passage add-on, and now they run smooth as silk; full sounds, and NO slowdown whatsoever.

So I got to thinking if patching DOOM II would do anything, and it certainly did. DOOM no longer stutters. The sound effects sound like crap, but I've learned you can't be too picky with DOS games in Windows XP.

I put this up to help anyone out there who had the same problem(s) as me. Hope this helps! 😀

On step six in build XP it says to download his specific shortcut configurations. This implies theat there is a specific VDMS setup when using the cli2nop and NOLFB. Also when I extracted the 2.0.4 VDMS update into the VDMS directory in program files, a bunch of midi-oriented files needed a password to overwrite, so I skipped 'em. Not good? Probably not, but I'm no wiz so what the frag?

so - is there a port that shows the game in its original way? i don't want any enhancements, i want it pure "id" 😀

it would be very nice if some could help me. i also have a stuttering sound which slows doom. i found out it is the FX sound. i'll try the patch as the user above has done. we'll see. further ideas? i would appreciate that.

my system is:
AMD AthlonXP 1600+
512 MB DDR RAM
ECS K7S5A v1.0
gForce 4 Ti 4200 detonator 45.23
WindowsXP (prof.)
Soundblaster 5.1 Live!

Well, dig out a 486, install DOS and get on with it then 😖

DOSBox is your best bet but I've not tried it myself.

to all who read this - as stefan1200_ said before, i can agree with doom legacy - it is a runtime for winXX that gets your old Doom versions run smoothly. it adds only minor features like a console (like in quake series) and a mouselook which is optional. have a try, guys
i'm going back to play doom 😀

I tried it out last night. Doom Legacy has come a long way since I last was using it! It feels like original Doom! I like the 3D models and retexturing that's possible with jDoom so I'm torn between the two! The reason I went to jDoom was to play multiplayer which was a complete pile of .... in Legacy at the time 🤣
