What is the model of your motherboad and what CPU is installed? Or post a picture.

80487 is a socket for "math coprocessor" if you use a 486SX processor. With replacing/upgrading CPU you would first remove the old one and place a new one in the same socket and leave the 80487 empty.

I found this: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/80487/the Amazon and this link both say 169 pin socket. I'll count the pins when I get home.

Check the MOBO first. In case you can install other CPUs it is easier / cheaper to install a 80486DX or Pentium Overdrive.

Good luck finding a 487. The last two I saw for sale were over a year apart. One was sealed in box for $199 and the other was loose for $99. For those prices you're better off getting a socket 3 motherboard and 486DX chip to put in it.

I beleive this is his motherboard http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherboards/P/PA … ml#.VHOTGsmmXN1

its a Packard Bell system. If you want to stay slow at 33mhz just get a 33mhz 486DX as suggested. as for mixing out the CPU, would an AMD 133mhz work in this machine, I assume so. It wouldnt give quite the power of the POD but I think its a cheaper option for good power.

Why not first trying to make that IDE connector before looking further.

~ At least it can do black and white~

And if for some odd reason IDE won't work for you there's always SCSI.

Yep. Scsi cards are pretty cheap compared to IDE cards.

I'm seriously considering scsi right now.
