I just recieved my Asus P5A, and I noticed that it is a revision 1.6 and the chipset is Ali-V Revision G or E.
The biggest chip up at the CPU has "G" printed, and the small down around the PCI/ISA slots have "E" printed.
I have two questions at the moment, regarding this board.

What revision of the chipset is this? And second. Is the Asus P5A Rev. 1.6 any good over, say, revision 1.4/1.5's
For the moment, I am quite happy with this purchase. It came with two mem-modules, a K6-2-500 and a GF2-MX400-64.
I got all of this, really cheap. Just 200 kroners without shipping, which is roughly 30 US Dollars.
(cheap retro hardware is still to be found I guess)

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, revisions after 1.03 and 1.04 do not support K6+ CPUs (K6-2+ and K6-III+), making the system very unstable and slow. I have no idea why this happens. The board should perform just fine with vanilla K6-2 and K6-III CPUs though!

Ohh....
If that is the only issue, then I am ok with the purchase. As long as it can run regulair K6-II and K6-III cpu's, then I am satisfied.
I had a K6-II-500 back in the late 90's, and this board is going to be the backbone of a recreation of that machine.
I have a K6-III-400, and because the K6-III have L2-Cache, and I have good coolers. Then I have no real need for the K6-III+.

Now for the chipset. Is it revision "E" or "G"?

EDIT:
Found the info on how to identify the chipset revision. I have Rev. G

New and hopefully last question.

Does the revision G of Ali-V, have any bugs that I should be aware of.
I mean. I know about the bug that makes the + cpu's run unstable and painfully slow.
And there are reports that the beta bios, corrects this issue.
And the last official bios is the one that will allow K6-2-500's run.
Besides these issues, are there any that I should be aware of?

Nope. Great boards. I have 1.03, 1.04 and 1.06. All work well and are my favorite ss7 boards.

No beta bios can correct the k6+ problem with the 1.06.
Didn't check for myself but according to amd-k6.com revision G can cache more ram. Not a big issue when using a k6-3 but interesting when using a k6-2.

From amd-k6.com:

ALI Aladdin V revision D and E

With 512 kB Level 2 Cache, 128 MB are cacheable
With 1024 kB Level 2 Cache, 128 MB are cacheable

ALI Aladdin V revision G

With 512 kB Level 2 Cache, 512 MB are cacheable
With 1024 kB Level 2 Cache, 4096 MB are cacheable

True about that abillity at caching more memmory, I have seen that too and take it as an plus in my book.
On the other hand, I do not need more than 128mb, for what this board is going to be used for.
It came with an K6-2-500 cpu, and hopefully it's behaving it self with this cpu.

I could allways swap cpu's with my FIC-PA2013 board, as I have an K6-III-400 in that machine.
Just a total mess and really hard, getting that Athlon cooler off the socket on the FIC board. Prefer not to.

k6-2 500 will have no problems on that board.

Nice.... One step closer to recreating my Ali-V K6-2, from the late 90's.
I had so much fun with that machine. Allways stable and rock solid.
A shame this board is not the GA-5AX. Ohh well... Can not find one.

EDIT:
Totally forgot to ask, if anyone knows how much load, I can put on the AGP slot?
The FIC PA-2013 does not handle much. How about the P5A?
Can it run cards like Voodoo3 and GF4 without blowing the voltage regulator?

Voodoo3 no problem, gf2 no problem. Wouldn't trust it long term But gf4ti even Works. Max gf2 to be save is what i do. It has the 6A regulator and not the 2,5A that some boards have.

That is great news. Thanks many times. 😀
Now for I am be off getting a GF2 GTS.
Think that the GF2 MX400 that I have, are destined to my FIC board.
Or I might slam an Matrox G400 dualhead in this instead.
For soundcard. An AWE64 value is on it's way.
And for the Ram. Two nice 64mb modules came with the board.
For HDD, a nice 120gig is in my pile of drives.
Else.... I can just use a really quiet sata with an converter.
I have both an 80 gig and an 40 gig.

In my 3dmark99 tests: g400 is faster on both p3 450 and k6-2 450.

I have a Gts in my k6-3+. Runs Well and it is waiting for the CPU So AA is Free. For most games i use the v2's though.

Strange how the Matrox G-400 is underrated as much as it is.
It's fast, got dual monitor output and is passive cooled.
On the other hand, the G400 is really dependent on the CPU.
Whatever that means. I guess it's about a faster CPU gives faster gfx.

Have decided now. The MX400 goes straight into my P3.
And the G400 goes into the P5A system.

Need to find a new place for my TNT2 ultra then.
And still have a TNT2 pro/m64 and a TNT1-PCI that I don't know what to do with.
