Hi all,
I've got this K6 III 400 on the Chaintech 5AGM2 mainboard. This mobo would need a special usb connector to enable the onboard option of the Via MVP3 chipset so I choosed to use a Via based 4-1 USB2 pci card.
The problem is that no matter I install it with default or via drivers, it crash the system at boot at Windows logo. I also used a different NEC based usb card and it just crash at the same time. I read somewhere that VIA MVP3 had problems with AGP <-> USB but I don't understand what kind of conflict is there. I tried different configurations of vga and audio card but nothing solve it.
Any advices?

Thank

Have you tried different slots? Enabling or disabling PCI bus mastering? Also try removing other PCI devices for testing purposes.

Yeah I tried but the pci bus mastering is not in the bios options and to enable it on windows I should at least boot into normal mode with some tool. Strange to me that even another functional different chip based usb card crash in the same way.
Definitely a tough experience this mainboard....

disable EVERYTHING you can in the bios. parallel, serial, 2nd ide slot (if possible).

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I had an unreliable card once that behaved in very strange ways. Do you have anything plugged into the USB card? Have you been able to use the card on a different system? Have you tried booting Puppy Linux from a Live CD?

Is this Windows 95, 98, or what? Windows 95 was never particularly compatible with USB.

Also, have you disabled the onboard USB in the BIOS?

I've had problems with VIA USB 2.0 cards. I think it's a PCI revision issue. The NEC based cards are usually more compatible with pre-2000 motherboards. Just search the forum a bit and you'll find some threads from the past.
