So i bought a 3dfx Voodoo Banshee video card, but the cooling fan it came with had it's connector cut off. Naturally i assumed that it was broken and unusable cause i can't plug it in without the connector, so i ordered a new one, but after attaching it to the heatsink and plugging it into the thing on the card it wouldn't work. The fan was getting really hot, but it wasn't spinning. I thought i had gotten really unlucky and received a faulty one, so i bought another one but what a surprise that one didn't work either. Obviously i was doing something wrong, i gave all 3 fans to my father to test them (he used some device to run electricity through them) and they all started spinning, even the original one that had it's connector cut off worked perfectly. So tell me please, why can't i get them to work on the card? Am i plugging them into the wrong spot? Did i buy the wrong kind of fan? Could the 2-pin connector thing on the card be faulty?

Here's a picture of the fan it came with:

In case you can't read it, the text on it says the following:

The brand new fan that i bought:

Maybe the polarity is reversed?

Try to switch the wires on the connector. You can life the pins out of the connector using a sharp pin.

Why don't you buy a standard fan that you can plug into your power supply? That's what I would do.

Can you give me a link to see what kind of fan you mean? I haven't seen any with connectors as big as the ones on the power supply.

Also i googled "voodoo banshee fan" and all the fans in the pictures seem to be 5 volt fans, but the ones i've got are 12 volts. Could it be that the card requires a 5V fan specifically?

I've seen Socket 7 fans with molex connectors. I'm not sure if that's too big for your card, though. A little Googling also turns up numerous hits for molex-to-3 pin adapters suitable for other fans, but again I'm not sure what connector is present on the fans you've bought so far.

There are a few possibilities:
1- You plugged it the wrong way;
2- The power connector you plugged the fans into is busted;
3- 5V is not enough to start the fans.

1 and 2 can be tested by a multimeter. 3 can be tested using a 5V PSU. If you do not know enough about the subject to test yourself, perhaps your father does. You said he already tested the fans, you could try asking him if the tested using 12V or 5V.

if all else fails, get an strand of wire with a female molex end, a few couplers and heatshrink, and add a molex to the end of the fan. Its rather easy to do and should take under 5 minutes.

I'd guess the original fan broke and someone tried to put a replacement on that was 12V.

Fans with Molex connectors are usually larger "case fans" though you may find a smaller one on a CPU heatsink - or as an extra for adding to a chipset cooler. If you can only find a 3 pin fan, then you need a molex to 3 pin fan adapter.
