I recently replaced my AWE64 Gold with an AWE64 CT2760 Rev. 3 (wanted OPL3 and soundfont > 4MB).

Everything seems to be working as it should in DOS.

In Windows 98SE, I did a search for new hardware, and Windows found three devices:

* Creative Advanced Wave Effects Synthesis for AWE 32
* Creative Sound Blaster 16 or AWE-32
* Gameport Joystick

However, it also found six "Unknown Devices."

I believe that three of these are for the CD-ROM interfaces, and one is for the MPU-401. Not sure what the other two are. Windows sound seems to work fine, but I'd like to get rid of these unknowns if possible.

Is there a way to disable the CD-ROM interfaces via jumper? I checked Stason, but didn't see an option. Also, any idea where I might find the drivers for the other two devices? I tried installing with the 3 floppy set on Vogonsdrivers, but it is missing the Accessories Disk. The AWE32 PNP CD-ROM on Vogonsdrivers installed the applications fine, but I'm not finding the drivers on it.

Congratulations! You have bought the best (or second best depending on who you ask) AWE32 😀

Here is a link to the jumper settings for the card. It dosnt look like you can disable the CD-Rom interface but only one should be enabled at a time.

Thank you. I decided to bite the bullet and pay the going rate for this model ($50) rather than waste more time trying to save a few dollars. I wish I had done this before trying to come up with a solution with a Goldfinch. I also picked up a CT3900 for slightly less, and I may end up using it instead, but I wanted to test the CT2760 first.

I did see the Stason illustration, and the one you linked to is the original version of the CT2760. I have the Rev. 3. The Stason page for the Rev. 3 does not show how to disable to CD-ROM interfaces (unlike the Stason page for the original version).

2760 and 3900 are the two absolutely best of them all.
The oldest one have a tendency to spontaneously die.
Mine did and then I got a 3900 without SIMMs.
I just reused those from the 2760.

Now you have the two absolutely best 32's ever made.
(If you ask me)

Back to your question.
It might likely be the controller that it is asking a driver for.
You can not disable it, so try choosing a different controller out of the three.
(move a jumper)

Do I feel dumb. I had forgotten that I had installed a Radeon AIW 9800 Pro in this build. The unknown devices came from all of the extra video functionality of the card. Sorry for the trouble.

9800 Pro is a great Windows card, but its VESA implementation couldn't do 1024x768 in Duke 3D. I swapped it for Ti4600, so no more unknown devices.

I must not have enabled the MPU401.

Turns out that 30-pin 16mb SIMMs are not cheap. I discovered that one of the big eBay sellers of this kind of memory has lower prices if you search for Macintosh Quadra memory. Some Quadras use 72-pin SIMMs, so make sure that the photo shows a 30-pin module. The seller accepted a best offer of $30 for four sticks, so I'm happy with that price.
