Hi all. This is going to be my last full SS7 build for my collection of complete computer's.
Well... Untill something dies in one of my build's, and I have to swap hardware around,
in order to balance everything out yet again. So I thought.... Well...
Why not do a sort of Fanboy build, an Asus fanboy machine! Hence the name... "The FanBoy"
This is build is (you guessed it) created by using Asus part's. Allmost exclusively. (Allmost)
It is so fanboy, that I even chose as many Asus datacables as I could (PATA and Floppy)
Yes. The cables are Asus branded... Giggle. I just could not help when doing an Asus build.

-AMD K6-2-500.
-Kingston 128mb PC-133 Ram Single Side.
-Asus P5A Rev. 1.06
-Asus TNT2 V3800M/32m AGP.
-Asus PCI-SC875 SCSI Controller.
-Creative AWE64-Gold CT4390.
-Orchid Voodoo1.
-9.1gb IBM Ultrastar SCSI HDD, 10K rpm's.
-1.44mb Floppy, unknown manufactor.
-Random Optical Drive.
-All Floppy and Pata cables are Asus Branded (for the laugh of it)

Mind. This is just a temporary build at this stage. Everything has to be tested first.
At this point, it looks like all is running smooth. (Problems could come though)
The TNT2 gives me some 2940 points in 3D-Mark99. I guess this is a fair score.
In other words. Yeah. This machine is alive.

Initially. I had a 20gb Seagate ATA-66 Harddrive attached. And everything went well.
At this stage, it is only a matter of getting the SCSI part tested and up and running.
All looking well at this point.

As I mentioned. This build is my last full SS7 build. I am going to venture into 440BX build's from now.
What do people think about the idea behind this build? It is actually ment as a sort of joke 🤣 😉
What do people recommend me to run on this machine?

I did a build with essentially the same mboard and CPU. Here is a current topic I created:

CF Card Through IDE - SLOW!

Having issues getting the correct speeds out of the CPU. The point of my build was to be able to span a few generations of hardware. Will play everything from 286 to CD-Rom, Pentium era games. I'm curious how this runs and would appreciate any notes on how you make out. Would be great if you took a look at my thread and had any suggestions.

Thanks!

I would go for a better quality psu.. If the weight is very low, mostly these are very cheap psus. You need a heavy one with Active PFC at least.

~ At least it can do black and white~

May I suggest the 440GX chipset over the 440BX? You can use 2GB of RAM in a GX machine, which with dual processors makes it pretty usable even for day to day tasks. I have a dual 1GHz Coppermine machine with 2GB of ECC RAM running at 100MHz FSB currently, but I have 2 1.4GHz Tualatins and 2GB of PC133 waiting for a decent price on the converters...

Premio 212B motherboard (MSI MS-6112)
Intel PentiumII 333MHz Slot 1 66MHz bus
384MB ECC 66MHz
SIIG ATA133 controller --> Seagate Barracuda 80GB
SIIG Gigabit Ethernet (RTL8169) / USB 2.0 / IEEE1394 controller
ESS 1869 soundcard on board wavetable synth

Nice little machine you did. 😀 I am going to do some benchmarking's when the build is done, and will report it here.

Thanks. As I mentioned.
This build is to be looked at, as a sort of joke wich are on the Asus FanBoy's at the time of SS7-era.
Well... Actually on fanboy's in general, and I just happened to have all these Asus part's laying around.

You know... I hate it when fanboy's are like "Only this brand can do everything" and all that crap.
For me, technology is more like choosing the right tool for the job. And because, well, technology IS fun
in all it's aspects. Windows, OsX, Linux, Amiga-OS and other like BeOS are all equally cool when playing.
iPhone, Windows-Phone, Android and even old Nokia 3210 are equally cool. It all depend on need's.
I mean... Why get an Galaxy S6-something/iPhone 6S-Something, when all you need is to talk?

The PSU chosen, is the LiteON, I found in an Acer machine.
It is stable enough, and I actually think that it is good enough, as it feels as there are more weight in it compared to cheap PSU's.
And it is silent, wich is good. As that 10K is really loud. It's a love and hate story regarding loud HDD's for me.
Both a retro-blessing positive feel, and a irritation-point when listening to music and soundeffects in games.
Love it. Hate it. 🤣

Nope. Sorry. Not going for 440GX chipsets. The venture into 440BX are more driven by me sourcing cheap parts.
I know this is our hobby and old computers are fun and have personality. And that is pretty much it.
But let's face it. It's all junk at the end of the day, right!? I mean. 10 to 20 year old stuff, with unknown history
of previous owners.... That is why I look at it as being more or less without value. With few exceptions.
Gravis cards are one of them. Yeah... They are really something worth paying something for. Not SS7 boards.

Speaking of cheap parts and what I can get my hands on. I will be recieving a haul on monday for 400 Danish Kroners.
Wich is somewhat really cheap if I look at what I will get. 400 Kroners is roughly the same as 60 US Dollars.
I will be getting the following:

Asus P2B-DS, including 2 x 550 Mhz Pentium3 CPU's
Asus P2B-S, including 1 x Pentium2 CPU (speed unknown)
One A-Open HX45 atx-Case
One A-Open HQ45 atx-Case
2 unknown (at the moment) motherboards wich I am qurious about.
And a collection of different cards and other hw, wich is stuff like SCSI controllers and GFX cards.

In other words. I am building from what I can get my hands on for cheap.
As I really do not want this hobby to spiral out of control, money-wise. No GX, BX it is. 😀

Hehe.... Yeah, that crossed my mind too the other day.
I actually do not know anything about what Asus branded ISA soundcard that would be better than an AWE64-Gold.
Would be nice, if Asus did V2 back in the day's. Imagine an Asus branded V2-SLI setup. That would be a thing. 🤣
Honestly... Even fanboys back then, had to get other type of brands. And I guess they would have used quality parts.

Thanks, thought I was nailing it with the config based on what I was looking to do. It would be great to see your bench results with the same tools I used.

I have an I-A16C which has a Vibra chip, and... yeah, stick to the AWE64 🤣

Uhhh.... That would be comprised of the most shitty SS7 board ever, the most unbalanced and low powered GFX for this board (PCI though the board should have AGP port) and the worst soundcard for Dos. (CT:5803) Hmmm... Perhaps it should have a really loud fan and some 80mm server case-fans, screaming at 120db. (2 of them in fact)

Yeah. This should be a real hatefull pc. 🤣

Edit:
Not to forget.... Such a pc, shure could use some MFM-Love as storage.
And be build into a leather suitcase.

Dude, just get a PCChips M590/M571 where the onboard vídeo is wired to the AGP bus (and it is not exposed as a slot)! Then something like an AD SoundPort, OPTi 83C931 or ALS120 based sound card. Oh, and a Cyrix processor... or an IDT WinChip.

Cyrix is way to mainstream and popular for "The Hater". IDT WinChip seems much more suitable 🤣
