Hi all ! I have some fast 286 machines with 4 megs of ram and 20mhz Harris CPU. To my surprise WORD 6.0 works fine on a fast 286 with win 3.1...

I wonder, what other interesting software I can use and to show to modern people on that configuration ?

Anything that doesn't need Win32S - I remember running a mix of 286 and 386sx systems on Win 3.1 and don't recall anything the 286 couldn't do - now if you drop to real mode (8086 or 286/386 with 1MB and no high reallocation), then compatibility goes down the drain.

As Math97 mentioned there's lots of stuff you can run. I've noticed that there is software does require 386 enhanced mode, mIRC for instance. It runs fine on my 386 running wfw 3.11 but not the 286 in standard mode in win3.1.

WS_IRC is an irc client that works in Windows 3.1 in standard mode. To use it you need a network card, packet driver, winpkt and trumpet winsock. WS_FTP works I understand as do the telnet and ftp clients from Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Works well on my 286/12. I use PFS:WindowsWorks on it because I didn't have any luck installing MS Works or Claris Works which I suspect is be because of the same reason mIRC wouldn't run.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

Does Opera 3.x work on your Machine ?
i try with 4Mb Ram on 286, does crash.
Also TDK Pinball crashes.

You could also try Jasc Paint Shop Pro 3.x a Photo Editor (JPEG etc..)
works fine on 386SX 2Mb Ram, i had no time to try it on my 286..

Civilisation for Windows won't run. requires 386..

Microsoft Entertainment Packs should work.
