Just got an original case from IBM, for model 5160 recently. It's empty, and came with no screws.

I thought that normal case screws would work, but it seems they are too small to get any grip. Was the PC screws 'standard' different in the 80s?

Image for reference. Not my case.

I would try using 8-32 screws.

Yes. The original size was 8-32.
Modern case screws are 6-32. Same threads/inch but smaller diameter.

Try to get one with oversized heads, as the hole in the cover is far larger than that in the base. I ended up using a washer and even then it was only just big enough.

There is a kind of washer called "Fender Washer".
They are extra big around for the center hole size and usually a little thinner than other options.
(Just in case it helps.)
