Thanks. I will let you know how it goes. Hopefully the board is still good. Should have bought a dual pentium 3 with that money... Or a Lada car as a project 😁 Oh well, live and learn...
I have a nice and heavy 750w psu and I did try it with one cpu. Still the same.

The 'stock' PSU for this thing is a Delta DPS-1050CB which has 9.0 amps on +5vsb.
I dunno if you actually need all of that but it might be a good idea to find a stock PSU to stay on the safe side.
At least if you are going to use it full time.
.
The Dell/HP server boards are often a PITA like this to get setup outside of their native system.

Well, my psu is rated for 28 amps 5v rail so i think that should be enough 😜
And yes, I did pull the battery. I actually pulled the battery out when I unpacked the board and put it back in when everything was assembled.

+5vsb is a completely different rail than +5v. It's the standby power.
They don't even come from the same place inside the PSU.

Oh sorry, didn't see that. Yeah, i know the difference, but I guess I don't know how to read 😁. My psu is rated for 2.5A for +5vsb
But I don't see why it would need so much standby current. I measured it right now and the voltage doesn't seem to drop so I guess that it is good enough. 😀

Some server boards keep the RAM partially powered from +5vsb even in standby.
Should not be a problem now as you are only using 2 sticks.
If you go filling up the RAM slots later it might become a problem as normal FB-DIMMs are not a low power RAM.

I'm not up on exchange rates but the stock PSU looks pretty cheap.

The prices themselves are reasonable but the postage prices are huge! 21.9 postage for the one that costs 41.18 pounds, 58.11 for 13.75 one and 196.2 postage for the 20.59 costing unit! Unbelievable! And then taxes...

The one that costs 41.18 pounds is free shipping here.
I did not realize so many were US sellers on the UK site.

And socket 771 boards are very picky about RAM type/speed.

Fortunately 1Gb and 2Gb sticks are quite cheap these days.
.
You can ignore the ECC part of the description. All FB-DIMM is ECC.
.

I would go right into 4GB modules. Just at friday i got 2 pieces for $9.90 per piece with free postage ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Micro-4GB-PC2-530 … -/111838425526? ). See no reason to buy 2GB modules - they heats a lot (65-72 degrees with cooler, around 100 without), so more modules, more heat.

Another thing i noticed was fixed memory frequency depending on CPU, with Xeon 5110 (1.6GHz/1066FSB) i wasnt able go over 533Mhz. When i changed cpu to Xeon 5140 (2.33Mhz/1333FSB), frequency went to 667MHz. So if he using PC2-4200F memories with 1333FSB CPU, this could be his problem. Not sure that 533MHz memories are supported with 1333FSB cpus.

Memory is cheap, CPUs are also for good prices, but im unable to find cheap cooler for 2nd CPU (sadly s771 have really uncommon mounting holes).

The stock Intel coolers work wonderfully for socket 771. They throttle well so even noise isn't usually a problem.
Use the copper or copper slug type if the CPU's TDP is over 85 watts. Below that all aluminum is fine.

PCBONEZ likely knows for sure, but I have a Supermicro PSU in the range of 1,000 watts, and even when it is in standby mode, it has fans that kick on--May have something to do with that.

I've got here fully working xw8600 with 800W PSU and xw6600.
Coolers are non-standard, so intel 771 type cooler will not fit, they're too wide for hp mobo, checked that. There is a 2 types ofheatsinks for xw8600: standard and double tall for X54.. series xeon with 150W TDP. I'm using xw8400 high perf heatsinks (low, 1 fan, 4 Heatpipes) with success.
I'v never seen a problem with caps or heat on that mobos. Cooling is very effective and quiet. FBDimms are very high temp modules: typical 70 celsius degrees.
Motherboard accept 1600FSB Xeons without using 800MHz Fbdimms.

On xw6600 i run dual X5260 xeons with pc2-4200f without a problem.

Here it pinouts and voltages and rails:

Ok so the store where I got the ram doesn't have anything faster, but at least they took back the slower ram. Guess I will have to buy some from e-bay after all even though I really don't want to... I see 32gb pop up at around 50 dollars (around 100 with shipping and taxes) from time to time. It's really hard to decide on how much ram to get because I don't even know if the thing works, but if I buy cheaper ram to test and then upgrade I spend a lot of money on shipping. I found one good deal on 2x4gb 18 dollars free shipping from Honk Kong so I guess I am buying that.
And then we see what happens! Hopefully it works.
Thanks Callahan! Just what I needed. The main connector appears to be standard atx (by voltages on pins) as far as I see (maybe I missed something) Also the shape of connector pins on the picture are different than my board or psu connector.

As I look Xw8600 mobo has 1x24pin, 1x10pin, 1x6pin power connectors.
Motherboard is compatible with every matched pair of fbdimms. Best FBDimms are pc2-6400f (800MHz). 4GB are now best buy. Here in Poland 6$ for 4GB/667.
Remember about heatsinks: intel oem will not fit. Must use original from xw6400, 6600, xw8600 or xw8400(these are best and cheap, wired for X series xeons), they'll fit.

I totally understand the awesomeness of dual socket 771 Xeon systems but I have to say when it comes to memory Im glad Im a Socket-1366 kind of guy. 4GB DDR3 1333 ECC REG is worth next to nothing around here, there are millions of used DDR3 4GB ECC REG modules on the market at the moment becuase of all the servers and workstations getting upgraded with 8GB and 16GB modules.

Fast 4GB FB-DIMM modules are normally really expensive here in Sweden.
