I got my first pc in 1998 and I can swear that whatever sound card I was using was much better than opl3, but not as good as wavetable/ms wavetable synth. E.g at the doom 2 title screen, the strings sounded like the Psycho shower scene and the cymbals were much less realistic/almost sounded like they weren't there. I compared a midi being played on this card to someone elses' awe32/64 and his instruments sounded completely realistic. Could it have been a card that tried to do wavetable but wasn't quite up to the task? Or am I just looking through nostalgia goggles? Looking at what drivers I had on cd back then, I owned an avance logic as007 and an analog devices ad1816. I've tried a few ISA cards that I got a few days ago that are sound blaster compatible/opl3 but they sound, well, opl3... and a sb live and creative 128 which basically sound identical to the ms wavetable synth.
