I've been working on this chart that shows 'typical' DOS performance from the 286 up to the P233MMX. I've gotten most of the results from Phil's VGA Database, some from my own Cachebench Database, and have derived some of the missing ones from the existing data. I've been sticking to the most common CPU types (Intel and AMD) just to keep the chart absorbable at a glance. The Speedtst scores I just pulled out of its own database (using most commonly occurring results). The results with 'REF' after their name are real scores taken from a database. The results with 'EST' after their name are derived ((derived results are still using real Speedtst numbers (if there are any for that cpu) from the Speedtst database)).
I have no data for 286s of any speed, so if any of you
a) have 286s you can run these benches on (with non-exotic settings that represent 'typical' performance)
b) can give me educated guesses
I'd really appreciate it. This is just for me at this point, for my own curiosity and interests. If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to stick it on a spreadsheet for others to contribute to, but that's not my expectation at this point. 😀
As an aside, is a 286 capable of running Doom? I know we have some slow 386 Doom results, and that some fast 286s are on par with slow 386s, so I'm curious if Doom on, say, a 286-16 would score similarly to the 386-16 currently at the bottom of my chart?
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.
