Recently, i had the idea of installing multiple Windows versions (98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7... ,maybe 8/8.1 and 10 if the hardware can). Running some benchmarks and comparing the OSes.

I have the following benchmarks as now:
3DMark99/2000/2001SE/03/05/06 (will be run on default settings)
PassMark PerfomanceTest v6/v7/v8
Quake 3 Arena
7-zip 9.20/16

Test systems (with spare hardware i own or i owe from other of my systems)

Plataform Hardware Options:
i865 + P4 (Abit AI7 with Pentium 4 3.2C/3.2E or bench with both CPUs, tests will be with both HT enabled and disabled. Other motherboards options could be ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe and the Gigabyte 8IPE1000-G)
Athlon 64 Socket 754 (DFI K8T800 Pro-ALT with Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2 Ghz 512 KB L2 Newcastle)
Athlon XP (MSI KT6V-LSR with an Athlon XP 3000+ Barton FSB 400)

Videocard Options:
Geforce 4 MX 440-8x (not supported on Vista+)
Geforce FX 5500 (no proper support in Vista+)
Geforce 6200
Radeon 9600
Geforce 7600GT AGP (no official Win 9x support, although modded drivers could be used)

RAM Options:
Ranged from 512 MB up to 2 GB DDR400

HDD Options:
Samsung HD080HJ 80 GB SATA
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80 GB IDE
Maxtor DiamondMax 9 120 GB SATA

Audio Options:
¿Should i stick to the onboard audio or use a soundcard?
I have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 and the PCI128

¿Do you have a suggestion or thoughts about this? ¿Other bechmarks/tools i can find?

This might take some time to happen (other stuff, friends...). I'll keep updated when i start the tests/builds and other stuff.

What is your biggest Pentium 4 Collection?
Socket 423/478 Motherboards with Universal AGP Slot
Socket 478 Motherboards with PCI-E Slots
LGA 775 Motherboards with AGP Slots
Experiences and thoughts with Socket 423 systems

A major unsettled question is what happens to the performance of Windows XP as SP1, SP2, and SP3 are added. Benchmarks exist, like http://icrontic.com/article/does_service_pack … 2_slow_you_down and http://www.zdnet.com/article/xp-sp3-performan … ite-home-about/ , but critically, the first one does not use older hardware like a PIII - and it has been suggested that SP2 specifically lacks optimizations for the PIII. A comparison of Windows FLP (with its various service packs) would also be useful. And maybe Windows 2000.

98 and ME are so ridiculously fast on a P4 that it would hardly be worth bothering with.

Well, the only XP version i have is Pro SP3, i had an SP1 disk, but i don't have anymore. Windows FLP was bassed on XP SP2 and only had SP3 as update
