So attempt 1 involved an 865G chipset mobo and the best AGP card with Win98 support - Radeon 9800 Pro. This was OK, but then I discovered the ASRock xxxdual-xxx boards and their AGP+PCIe options. But I can't get the VIA-880Pro chipset working properly under Win9x on that board. This was attempt 2.
So I'm back with the 865G chipset and a new mobo, a new plan (and some new requirements). So let me know what you think of this plan, and if the spec could be improved...
MOBO: GA-8I865GME-775-RH r6.6 - 775 / i865G / 2GB DDR / SATA / ALC 655 Sound
CPU: Core 2 Duo - E8600 3.3GHz - Or if I cant' find one an E8500 3.1GHz
RAM: 2GB
GPU for Win2K onwards: AGP Radeon HD 3870 (should be an AGP version but can't find any) or HD3850 (found several AGP versions for sale)
GPU for Win3.x and Win9x: PCI Riva TnT2 and/or some version of Voodoo PCI
Sound: Ensonic PCI 3000 for DOS/Win3.x (maybe Win9x if I cant get the ALC655 working)
Onboard ALC655 as I need WaveRT support in later versions of windows. The 655 should support it but I've not tried yet.
Are there any better GPU choices? I need the best PCI GPU with Win3.x support and this will also be used for Win9x gaming. Then I need the best AGP GPU full stop.
