I am looking at building a 3dfx specific computer to cover the non-3d-accelerated Win 9x games and 3d-accelerated games through maybe 1999, but I need some help picking the right CPU and video card pairings. I currently have one 12MB Voodoo2 but will likely buy a second one for SLI in the near future.
CPU Choices:
P200 -- my current early Win9x/DOS machine. It feels way too slow for most 3d-accelerated games even with a Voodoo2
PII-350
PII-400
PIII-1000 -- my current late Win9x machine. It is paired with a GF4 Ti4200 and feels too fast for most early non-3d accelerated Win9x games
I'm thinking one of the Pentium IIs is the best bet, and I would probably transfer most if not all of the early Win9x games to that computer.
GPU Choices:
TNT2 M64 PCI
Geforce DDR
Geforce 4 Ti4200
The Geforce 4 is overkill for either one of the Pentium IIs. I like the sound of going with the GeForce DDR with one of the Pentium IIs, 128-256MB of RAM, and an AWE64, but I also think it would create a bit of a redundancy with my Pentium III. In light of that, I've given serious thought to putting the Voodoo2 in the Pentium III.
