I'd like to try an overkill high performance win98 build with an intel chipset and a core 2 duo, which board should I go with? AsRock ConRoe865PE or Gigabyte GA-8I865PE775-G-RH? Seems like AsRock 775i65g rev 3.0 is the newest of these and still available new, also supports 45nm wolfdales, but the matx form factor might be a bit too tight for all the expansion cards I'd like to add... Is it even plausible to use the X6800 with those two? I heard a custom bios exists for the conroe865pe that fixes the memory multiplier issues with 1066mhz fsb? Anything like that for the gigabyte that seems to have higher quality components?

I have one and with modded BIOS, i got an E7500 work, i wouldn't recomend using E8x00 because of low multiplier and high FSB requeriment

I also just bought a ConRoe865PE yesterday.

The BIOS 1.72 beta has E7xx (R0) support, probably 1.71a beta aswell.

The non beta 1.7 is also reported to work with dual core 45nm CPUs but will probably give you a message telling you that the ucode for the CPU is missing.

Some people seem to have more issues with the last two beta BIOS releases than stable releases so if Carlos has a modified 1.7 that would probably be the best choice.

I have not tested these BIOS files my self as I have not got my board yet.

The 1.72 looks to have most relevant codes.

The E8x00 is a poor choice because of the low multiplier and high FSB as Carlos wrote. The E7x00, E6x00(v2) or E5x00 is preferable. E6500K and E5800 would probably be the best and second best option, E7600 or E6800 if you do not plan to overclock.

I'd think E5800 is not the 2nd best but the 1st best, since its 800 FSB so the chipset doesnt have to run overclocked, and is also more than fast enough not to hold back any AGP graphics card. What I'd be interested in is if it would be possible to get a s.771 xeon to work on this? Since E5800 has 65W TDP, something like Xeon LV 5133 (2.2ghz / 800 FSB / 4mb L2 / 40W TDP) would be interesting for a fast and efficient win98 build

Well since I have read that some ConRoe865PE boards actually seem to have issues running at 266 MHz with 4x1GB memory (3:2 divider) you have a point. The E7600 or E6800 would be a bit of a gamble.

The E6500K is unlocked so it should only add flexability. The 16x multiplier on the E5800 should be enough though and it's a much cheaper CPU.

That would be interesting, I'm trying to update the microcodes but mmtool claims that they are not valid since the file size is different... any suggestion?
About the cpu i'm actually undecided between E7600 and E5800, the first supports the sse4.1 but it has a lower speed and according to your suggestion E5800 seems better.

Every microcode has been updated, there is one microcode fewer because intel merged the platforms for CPUID 10676.

There are no microcodes for 771 but apparently they can be added without issues, the total number of microcodes goes up to 33, if anyone is willing to test it I can upload that file too.

In general, 266mhz bus is not a problem for 865PE/875P chipset, Intel certainly had plans to release some CPUs with that bus speed (never came to fruition due to lack of DDR533 standard). But small aluminum heatspreader without active cooling is not sufficient for MCH.

Btw I've heard of a modded bios existing for the conroe865pe that works fine with X6800, no memory divider issues or anything like that. Idk if mine has it or not, previous owner flashed a custom bios of some sort and recapped it with rubicons, but I'm not sure what version it has exactly. For the time being I've installed an E5300 since I had one handy, and seems to work fine with it

In the end I ordered both the E5800 and E7600 for just 10 eur shipped, in my collection I have a e8500 that I may try.
Will I have to add a small fan to the northbridge of the mb?

Specific replacements for the Compaq/HP DC530 pc. So it's a guaranteed compatible 1gb stick of Kingston memory for that machine. Should be some pretty good ram.
