Cool! While we’re on the subject of Pentium 4 laptops, here’s one I dearly love. The Dell Inspiron 8200! This is the updated version of the 8100. Notice those cool silver palm rests!

This particular one has a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 Mobile, and an ATi Radeon 9000 64MB graphics card! It’s my primary Windows XP machine, and man does it run XP well!

Mine also has what Dell called their “UltraSharp” display. It’s the same 1600 x 1200 resolution, but it’s brighter, has a wider viewing angle, and a higher contrast ratio than their standard UXGA display. I got lucky with this 8200, because it’s basically a top-end model. Someone definitely payed an arm and a leg for this thing when it was new!

I just love the Inspiron 8000 series laptops. They’re just fantastic in my opinion.

Wish I can find something like that. All of my displays are 1024x768 native, however, I can hook it up to an LCD monitor for better viewing. Even my ThinkPad R40 has a ThinkLight above the display that can light up the keyboard, ThinkPoint, and trackpad in the dark, and I have the ThinkPoint set to scroll in an X, Y, or Z pattern in Windows XP.

The one Dell Inspiron needs a new hard drive (crapped out again) and the ThinkPad R40 is going to need a new one as well, however, it still works (thinking about an SSD alternative, such as mSATA to IDE), and replace all of the laptop IDE drives with SSD.

Hi there all, I would like to show my humble retro machine:

1996 Tulip Vision Line DE 5/133, mobo TC48, Pentium 133Mhz - Socket 7, 8Mb EDO RAM, onboard Diamond Stealth Video 2500 (Alliance aT24) -disabled-, S3 Virge DX "Daytona" PCI GPU addon, HP MM16 pro V-A PnP (Aztec 2320) soundcard, Western Digital WDAC21600-00H Caviar 21600 1.6 GB HDD (original), IDE to CF adapter, HP CD-Writer Plus 8200 series (replacement), Gotek Flashfloppy FDD emulator as A:, original FDD as B:. Tulip PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Currently using a Samsung Syncmaster 152s LCD screen, I have a Tulip 15 inch CRT but have I to replace a potentiometer of one of the control knobs.

This 2nd hand machine had originally an HP Colorado T1000 backup tape drive. I replaced it with the Gotek floppy emulator, which fitted nicely! I did a bit of a botched retro-briting effort on the case (mild marbling effect). Running ms-dos 6.22/Win3.11 or Win98SE from CF cards works like a charm.

Hello all! First time poster here. I have been into computers for a very long time. (Think Atari 800 days). I have recently become interested in "retro" computing outside of the Atari / Amiga universe. I didn't start my PC career until 1995 and that was with a 486 DX/100 and Win95.

A good friend of mine works at IBM and has for the past 35 years. He was cleaning out his basement and offered me some "old" PC's and a TON of boxed games for free!

Here is the haul and what I have started to build out of it.

1) I intend to use this for DOS gaming----- IBM Personal Computer Model 100.----Pentium 100MHz / 16MB RAM / 2GB IDE to CF Card for HDD / Onboard S3 Trio 64V 2mb video / SB AWE32 CT 3990
2) Intended for Win95 OSR2.5 gaming------IBM Personal Computer Model 750----Pentium 133 MHz / 32 MB RAM / 8GB IDE to SD Card for HDD / PCI S3 Virge GX (STB Nitro 3d) / SB AWE64CT 4500
3) Intended for Win98 SE2 gaming----------IBM Personal Computer Model 300PL---Pentium III 600MHz / 64 MB RAM / 16GB IDE to SD Card for HDD / AGP S3 Savage 4 8MB/ Onboard Sound.
4) Intended for WinXP gaming---------------IBM NetVista Computer Model M42-----Pentium 4 2.66GHz / 640 MB RAM / 150GB IDE HDD/ Intel 845G Video onboard / Onboard Sound.

I have built the P133 and the PIII 600 today. Not sure on what upgrades I will do to the others. I have some Voodoo 2 and Voodoo 3 cards along with some other ATI cards.

I am thinking of swapping video on the PIII, P4 machines as well as adding SB cards.

That IBM PC 750 looks nice. I would try to upgrade it with a Pentium MMX (might or might not work, BIOS limitation could be a problem with this one, otherwise it's a regular socket 7 board), install a Voodoo 3D accelerator card or another fast PCI graphics card.

I normally use the BTC 5100C keyboard with it. I was just testing the Kensington orbit.. I don't like trackballs all that much and usually use just a standard Logitech or Microsoft mouse.

It is a Bridgeview VS-10S. The picture is excellent at 640x480. At 800x600 text is slightly fuzzy, and geometry at the top right is slightly skewed. Overall I'm happy with it though. 😎

I just did a write up of these two SS7 builds in the system specs forum (Two SS7 Builds - CUSTOM Mini-ITX Alternative to my Mid-Tower)

The mini-ITX build was basically an experiment to see if I could fit some spare parts I had into a easily transportable case and it ended up being challenging in a satisfying way!

I know there are purists who don't like mixing old and new hardware, but for me it's fun to make use of some modern conveniences while still maintaining my favorite parts of the retro experience (and alleviating a few of the headaches!). That ITX is amazing; did you make the PCI and ISA risers yourself or are they parts one can order online?

Unfortunately, I had to make the ISA extension and it wasn't exactly cheap. I found the PCI risers on ebay and stocked up on them for future projects. Thanks for the kind word!
