As I mentioned in another thread, I was one of the unfortunates that lost everything in Paradise.

So my accumulation of old stuff for fun began anew today. I snagged this out of a large dumpster on the street.

It fired right up, but that's where the fun ended - I no longer have an AT keyboard, or a keyboard adapter for AT to ATX, so seeing the (likely Windows 95) splash screen will have to wait.

I don't know; I didn't see any brand or model number on it when I was having a look. It's an FX chipset, which is a little too early to hold my interest. I'll be looking for a slightly later model Socket 7 AT board to put in this case at some point. But first I have to get a keyboard converter so I can see if this will boot into whatever OS is on the hard drive.

Today I found this... thing. No idea what a THMAG Translation Controller is, but I couldn't get over the fact that someone making industrial prototypes for a freaking space agency saw fit to etch the front panel entirely in Comic Sans.

It looks like they gutted it for parts; not much left inside except for some power supply components. No matter! It's perfect for an ITX or some kind of DIY synthesizer build; just right to house a flex-ATX PSU & low-profile graphics card (or 2-3 cards on a 90 degree riser.)

You BETTER believe I'll be keeping that big red ABORT button, and I'll try to make the LCD panel do something too.

Well, if it turns out to be that, maybe point out to the Canadian Space thingie that its possibly radioactive scientific gear is finding its way to the secondary market...can't imagine that kind of stuff is supposed to get a second life after decommissioning.

Given the 'Frequency Output' label on the back, maybe more likely to be some kind of data collection box (Phew! 😉 )

L0L. Considering it was in a VERY highly trafficked dumping spot, in a public building, where I and many others have taken things from lots of times in the past, I'm not too worried.

Much as the AWE64 Gold re-imagining (it's not a 1:1 rerelease by any stretch of the imagination) is incredibly impressive and promises to be pretty much the ultimate ISA sound card, it's a very niche market and unavoidably high pricing isn't going to help. I don't forsee a massive run on AWE64 Value cards anytime soon...

Well, they say there will only be about 30 cards made in the first run. We'll see how that goes in the future but I also don't expect this to have any effect on the price of AWE64 Value cards.

I recommend you dial the number on that box, and say that you've acquired it second hand and if they'd tell you anything about it? I'm sure they'd be happy to!
That basic stamp micro-controller should be perfect for fan control with a bit of hacking.

Thanks for the ID PC Hoarder. Yes, Google took me to a page that indicated that this was a PCChips board, and apparently is the infamous one that had fake cache chips on it! I'm still waiting for the AT to PS/2 adapter to see if it will boot to Windows, but in the meantime I bought a Biostar MB8500TTD for $39.00 shipped on Ebay. Not the TXP4 I would have liked, but the prices on those are downright silly these days.

The prices of common ISA sound cards are not rising anymore. The peak is reached.

And like I already mentioned earlier; most people don't want to spend massive amounts of money on retro hardware, even if it's new. Anything over € 300 is a pain in the ass to sell, I know that from experience.
