DOSBOX usage on a BBS

I've got several legacy doors that ran fine under my dial-up BBS...which first went online 14 years ago. When I switched from GT Power to Synchronet in 2005 to add telnet access, I lost all of those doors, as they won't run under telnet, since none of them were created with a fossil driver.

I know that Stephen Hurd (Deuce) has done work with DOSBOX, and also is one of the people with Synchronet. I was under the impression that DOSBOX could be used to run these legacy doors on a telnet BBS. But, while I can write a batchfile, my programming ENDS at my VCR...and I was quite confused by the documentation. In short, can DOSBOX be used to run these legacy, non-fossil DOS doors, on a telnet BBS?? And if so, how??

I'm running Windows XP, Service Pack 2, on a 1.8 Ghz Pentium, with 512 Mb of RAM, a 120 Gb hard drive, with a Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI Card. I'd rather not switch operating systems or BBS software, if at all possible. Any advice, help, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

At http://dosbox.bbsdev.net/ you could find out how (page seems to be currently down).

(A little addition: The DOS doors tend to lock up when dynamic core is used and "the user types while a script is running".)

I just clicked on it, and got the page. It mentioned 0.63 of DOSBOX...but, I just grabbed version 0.65 ... so I don't think that'll matter.

I have downloaded all the needed files from that page, and will work on setting them up after I look everything over.

As far as I can tell, the doors that I'm wanting to put online...with the exception of version 2 of TW 2002...are all single node (only one user at a time can access them). However, if I do set up version 2 of TW2002, I'll just make it where only one user at a time can access it.

I'll check back later for other feedback, and to post an update, once I get everything set. I do appreciate the assistance!!

Update: I noted with the DOSBOX setup that the .CONF files point to \SBBS\NODE1 -- on my system, the BBS is on D: drive -- will that make a difference??

Also, since many of the non-fossil doors on my BBS are single user only, is it OK to still use \SBBS\NODE1 for the dropfile -- even if node1 may already be busy with another caller who isn't using one of these doors?? Most of those single user, non-fossil doors, that I have on the BBS had the dropfile sent to the actual door directory when I ran it on my dial-up BBS.

Several years back, I got burned by a programmer who took over a BBS project (not related to Synchronet or DOSBOX), and made all these fantastic promises of what he was going to do with the product. Then a few months later...with not much of an explanation, he completely backed out of it.

Deuce got a bit miffed with me awhile back because I had posted a message from a quote he had sent me, on why he hadn't been working on DOSBOX...and it appeared that I was heading for another situation, similar to the one mentioned earlier.

I realize that DOSBOX and Synchronet are not the only things on his plate. Even though I apologized, I added that I would've appreciated a bit of an update on things every so often...even just once a month...even if very little had been done for various reasons. Besides, I doubt that anyone likes to be kept "in the dark" about items that matter to them.

I bear no hard feelings toward Deuce...I hope he feels the same about me. All I'm trying to do is make my BBS better for all my users.
