These brackets are meant to be used to get digital audio OUT by connecting the relevant wires to the three corresponding pins (SPDIF_OUT, +5V and GND) on your sound card or motherboard.
My question is, can you instead get digital audio IN if you connect the SPDIF wire to the SPDIF_IN pin and leave GND and +5V as they were? The card in question is an Audigy2 ZS and the pinout is attached below.
Intended use case: I want to connect a PlayStation2 to the Audigy2 ZS via Toslink cable in order to record high quality gameplay audio.
