I have several DOS gaming computers but most lag in the playing of audio and games.
The 486 just isn't fast enough.

So after watching LGR video on a Pentium over drive CPU upgrade to his famous wood grain 486 I have decided to
build a Pentium system for DOS.
https://youtu.be/jISmJG8QK0A

Here are the parts I want to use but I am not sure about how good PCI cards are with DOS games.
Also I am not sure about choosing the best parts for good compatibility and play back of games and audio in DOS.

Specs:
Intel chipset socket 7 motherboard.
CPU - Intel 233mhz MMX
RAM - 64mb EDO
Controller - Onboard

Audio - Sound Blaster Live 5.1 or AWE64 with DOS drivers
https://www.philscomputerlab.com/creative-labs-drivers.html

Video - ????? Not sure maybe a ET4000, or S3, Or Other ?
CDROM - 52x
Floppy drives - 1.44 and 5.25
Case - AT Case from 1990's

233 MHz MMX and 64 MB EDO RAM is good.

Sound: SB16 or Yamaha YMF. Forget about AWE or Live.

Video: S3 Trio64.

Boom you’re done. That’s the standard setup. Can be built several times over with dime-a-dozen parts.

Yeah, I might just go with 32mb of ram as I am only going to run DOS and Win3x
I do have a Yamaha Audician 32 audio card.
and a Sound Blaster Pro 2.0
I do have some S3 trio 64 PCi cards.

Quest for the Ultimate 486 computer.
Help me build a 233mhz computer.

I don't get it. How many computers are you are about to build? Or how many topics do you need for building one "Ultimate" DOS system?

It's hard to give any advice due to this mess of threads and constantly changing demands you apparently have. If you want to build an ultimate DOS system, ask yourself first which games you want to play on it. Then you know what hardware to use.

For DOS and Win3.1 only, using an MMX 233 is kind of wasted. The MMX 233 runs even Win98 just great and is a good match for many early 3dfx games. For DOS only, you should stick with a slower CPU. For me, pure DOS belongs to the 486 and vice-versa - because a 486 *is* the ultimate DOS system.

I have considered most of his threads as attention seeking instead of really asking help with something. Too much repetition in topics of his threads and other things that don't make sense.

Take an iPad and connect a retro keyboard through PC/AT-PS/2-USB-Thunderbolt-Lightning plug adapter. Job complete. No need to thank me.

C'mon guys chill....he's probably just trying to get his mind off the "crap" going down around us.

I wouldn't go with the Live or AWE64 for sound, LGR's rig had a SB Pro 2.0 I believe. Just base your setup
on what he's got, judging from your past photos of your garage/storage area you probably got the parts.

Yes, much like many people even “LGR” I am still looking for the best computer setup for playing DOS games.
I have gone thru the 286, 386 and 486 and haw found them inadequate for some games. They play too slow, choppy, and audio is not good.
I have found the CPU not to perform good enough.

So I am going to move on to a Pentium CPU.
First I am going to try the Pentium 100mhz.
Then a 150mhz
And then a 233mhz.

What CPU do you think would be best for DOS/Win3x ?

You've got it already. Pentium MMX 233 MHz.

Move into 686 and 3D accelerator territory and you're in Windows 9x land.

I'm disregarding early speed-sensitive games here.

Well, that’s why I want to try different speed Pentium. With a Turbo switch, and disabling L2 cache and SetMul utility I should be able to slow it down to a 286 CPU. I am trying to find the sweet spot for which CPU will play the mosts DOS games good.

My Super Socket 7 500MHz AMD K6-2 (Pentium 2 clone) hasn't given me any trouble in DOS 6.22.

Granted, I haven't tried it with those 'popular' games. Just a few that pique my interest.

I'd like to upgrade to a motherboard that has ISA, PCI, and an AGP slot, but I'm using an IBM PC-XT case, so that limits my options.

100%

There's a thread like this every week from the same user. The thing is, these questions have been answered a million times over on this forum--one just has to put in the work searching for that info. Or just build one exactly like LGR's -- it's fine. Ultimate this, ultimate that.

Okay, Here are the Socket-7 motherboards I have to choose from.
Which one do you think is bests ?
Via or Intel Chipset ?

The first motherboard is FIC PT-2006 - a very solid board even if the chipset itself is lacking

What is the second one? I'm not a fan of early VIA chipsets, but everything depends on implementation.

The third one is Acorp 5VX2 - not a very good board in my opinion.

They should be the same. The SY007 is just a newer stepping.

You will need to adjust the bus speed and maybe the multiplier to downclock. Does the Pentium 100 support a 1x multiplier? The default multiplier is 1.5.

What is the lowest bus speed supported by any of your motherboards?

50Mhz is common, and 40Mhz is somewhat less common.

If you use an Overdrive processor, you you should be able to force the 1x multiplier by removing the stock fan assembly as it will go into a failsafe mode to prevent frying itself.

Okay right now I am testing this Motherboard with the AMD K5-100 CPU.
By disabling CPU internal and external cache I have been able to slow down the CPU to a 386dx@40mhz.

I want to be able to go as slow as a 286@10mhz.
So I guess I will have to try a slower speed CPU.

What do you recommend ?

I doubt you would be able to achieve this level of performance (or lack thereof) with a Pentium-class CPU.

But for all means try something that runs at 50 MHz FSB. You can actually jumper your Pentium 100 (66x1.5) to run at 75 MHz (50x1.5). My feeling is that it would run roughly as fast as 386 SX-33.
