Others have expressed interest in this box of mine as I've mentioned it in other threads, so I figured I'd start a thread to discuss it. The CPU in this box is quite unique, a custom remounted laptop Tillamook 266 MMX on a desktop adapter of some kind that I found in 2010-11 or so (there was only one available at the time IIRC, or Id've bought more).

Since it's a laptop chip and wasn't designed to even have cooling AFAIK (and even if it was, it definitely can have a more effective cooler in a desktop) and it's lower voltage, so it generates less heat to start with. I overclocked it to 300Mhz since I could. It's set up at 66Mhz*4.5=297Mhz.

To my knowledge the cache is perfectly intact (someone said something about Tillamooks in desktops disabling the cache) and it's got 16KB L1 Data, 16KB L1 Inst. (are these the same or is it 32KB total?), and 1MB L2. Pretty respectable IMO!

I ran the benchmark "just because" and got 11 for single thread, and 9 for multi-thread. If anyone wants me to run a specific benchmark for comparison to similar boxen (a desktop chip at 300Mhz or 266 or what-have-you perhaps?) just let me know and I will do so.

While I have other enthusiasts looking at this, let me know if you spot anything wrong/bad/etc. that I may have overlooked. I must say I was very appreciative to see the people who maintain CPU-Z have a dedicated Windows 98 version. :3 Speaking of which, the box is running 98SE with no extra updates or anything because I've had bad luck with SP3 and 98SE2ME being unstable in the past. I plan to back up the windows folder and boot files and test combinations of them for stability once I have more software installed to use to test with (input appreciated).

Here's the specs of my baby:

Nah it's good I always exist, I do still have this box.

What'd you want to know about it?

What socket is that Tilamook? I can't tell whether it's MMC1 or Socket 615, how did you manage to get a socket adapter for it?

Socket 7, someone already made the adapter, it was a surface mounted chip originally and if I recall the adapter is kinda permanently part of it now. There was apparently a period of time where people in China were taking unused SMC chips and converting them to desktop packages, or so I heard around the time I purchased it.

If memory serves it it looks very much like this but with a built-in adapter (note I mean this picture specifically, not the others that show the full board it was mounted to):
http://www.cpu-collection.de/?l0=i&i=2408

It's been several years since I had the CPU out of it, though.

Is the multiplier on your chip unlocked?

That top picture looks pretty much like a close-up of the left bottom picture?

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

I have one of those too, I even posted a picture of it once here on vogons.
Didn't have the chance to test the cpu other then it booted on a S7 motherboard.
I hope when life is a bit more normal again here that I then try it on several motherboards and see what is possible!

Ah yeah, that makes sense. The entire MMC1/2 module was one of those "what were they thinking" ideas - package a CPU (okay), the cache (hmmm) and the Northbridge chip (wha...) together in a single module. Makes for some weird setups, like swapping from a Tillamook MMX to a 440ZX based PII module/Dixon will result in a laptop with EDO RAM...which is odd. I am not surprised if someone lift the CPU off the MMC1 package and added it into a socket 7 adapter - Intel certainly did it for their embedded Pentium MMX line (look up SL27S/SL2Z4 for examples of Tillamooks on Socket 7). Nice machine for Win98 stuff - makes me wish I have a Socket 7 machine that I can mess with....HMMMMMM. Maybe the K6-3+ inside my Cobalt Qube 3 can come out.

I wanted to know how you got the L2 cache to work with it, and what the adapter looks like.

Spoiler

I also didn't know that you don't get automatically notified of new posts on a thread where you have posted.

EDIT: I also expected it to be one of those Socket 7 Tillamooks, not that weird thing. Fascinating.

Yeah I put this in a box that supports up to a K6-III+ but I built it around this CPU to maximize it's abilities. I have a Voodoo2 chained to.. something - it's been too long since I used the box. Runs great, though.

I do not recall, though I seem to remember the multipliers being all determined by the board as far as what I messed with. If you can tell me how to verify this I will pull the box and do so at the earliest convenience.

I didn't do anything special to make that work, as far as I recall, it's possible the board provided L2? I dunno. I can get pics of the package at some point but it sounds like someone else posted pics of the same chip on here at some point (and I'd rather not take the cooler off because I'm sure I used heat compound for the mild OC and have only mediocre heat compound around at the moment).
