I'm the opposite, 3com or Intel network cards are my go-to means of working on these machines. I even have cards that can boot into windows over the network.

I'd try a 2 port usb card and see if that helps you.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Yes, that's what I usually did back in the day with tfpt and pxe boot servers, but I'm just fiddling around and play with these things (also not a permanent setup).

Thanks for the hint - will by a 2 port card and see for myself...

Today I spent 2 hours trying to understand why the GOG.com version of Betrayal at Krondor doesn't work in pure DOS.

It displays some junk on the screen and completely freezes the PC.

The freeware version from the now-defunct Sierra website works perfectly.

Was it at least watchable? I mean, some sights really make you want to bleach your eyes afterwards...

Nothing too crazy or even worth making a big fuss fortunately. Just a guy and his girlfriend going at it, and apparently being idiots, or else I wouldn't have seen it in the first place... Then again, if you collect/work on computers and don't find porn at least once, you're doing something wrong 😁

About pr0n: I have sent PM for @OldCat, if anyone is intrested too, just give me note and I will just upload it here.

EGA porn. It's so ridiculous, might as well 🤣

@wirerogue

That's a really nice board. I'm still using mine with an E8600 as my daily driver. The qx6850 is a great cpu. Oh yeah finding any 8 series card in working condition that hasn't cooked itself to death is quite the treasure hunt. I still have my original 8800 GTX put away. That thing put out some serious heat it was insane.

my 3rd 8800 ultra should be arriving today or tomorrow. the first 2 were no good. luckily, the seller is pretty cool and just sends me another one without having to ship the previous one back. crossing my fingers.

That's good at least saves on time and return shipping. We're they flat out dead or just heavy artifacting ?

they would post but wouldn't make it into windows.

My 9800 GT died about a year ago. No artifacts, it just didn't output anything whatsoever, and became completely invisible to the rest of the system. And the fucked up part? I did service it. I also replaced a cap that was bulging, but it still died anyway. These things might get very rare in the future.

Spent the whole day trying to get some sort of documentation and/or resources for a Dell Netplex 425s/p and an NEC Powermate 433. All I can find online seems to be a magazine advertisement and I think there’s one or two pictures of the NEC, maybe one of you folks here know something I don’t. Seriously considering creating some sort of online visual archive, since I have an ever growing collection.

Modded a rounded IDE cable that was as "AvE" would describe it "Stiff as a wedding pr*ck", and sticky too.

Almost useless in this state:
GQGWktIm.jpg

After cutting away the plastic it becomes a lot more bendable, and that's a metal sleeve wich I'm leaving on:

Adding plastic cable braiding and some shrink tubing its looks and feels a lot better:
TwTEjz0m.jpg

Would have looked even better if the cable was black, but at least its usable now.

If the Powermate 433 is similar to a Powermate 433D , there seems to be some info.

EDIT: If you are really luck, since Packard Bell and NEC merged their PC operations in the1990s, you might be able to something out of the Packard Bell ftp dump on archive.org .
