There are a GLUT of supermicro motherboards on ebay that are micro atx in size and have 6x 10g & 2x 1g ports. Going to make a pfsense box out of that.

Im going to try to just wire things directly to each other and see if that works out. If not i see 24port 10g switches on ebay cheap

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Nice those will make a nice pfsence box. I can't wait untill 10gig stuff really starts to drop in price.

You could get 2 boards and run Linux with Openvswitch on one of them to get a 6 port 10GB switch .

since the first three 8800 ultra cards i tried were all dead, i got 2 of these instead. evga 8800 gtx ko acs3
they were absolutely filthy and covered in some kind of black greasy gunk. water would not remove it.
lots of 99% isopropyl alcohol and even acetone on the metal parts (since isopropyl is ridiculously expensive right now.)
here's one of them running good as new after complete disassembly, detailed cleaning, new thermal pads and tim.

The attachment evga.8800.gtx.ko.acs3.a.jpg is no longer available

nice fat heatsink on the back of the card

So I've had a 4-drive array in my main rig since 2007 ish. Based on WD Black drive at 640gb a pop. I've used them almost 24/7 since then. My onboard raid controller started throwing errors at me the other day. (drive smart failure) @ out of the 4 drives are tossing SMART errors.

I decided to rectify the issue:
qn4QZXKm.jpg

4TB total with a theoretical max of ~12,000 MB/s. The 4-way PCIe card I need is still a few days away. I'll post a few benchmarks.

That's insane. What motherboard/platform are you using? Do you have enough PCIe lanes for this setup to work effectively?

It was pretty cheap too. https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboa … /C600/X9DAE.cfm
In the next year or so, V3/V4 xeons will fall in price and i'll upgrade to https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/X10DAX

I had to mod the bios to enable booting from NVME. Not to mention add a nvme/pcie card. I have 2 16x slots, so if I really wanted to, I could add another 4 drives. ^.^

Wow that system will fly with the new nvme drives. Please post some throughput benchmarks.

Re supermicro xeons, I assume this system will not work with windows 7 ?
What OS'es are supported, I wonder ?

..and, what would be considered 'cheap' for these mobos ? 🤔

Picking up a Radeon 5700xt XFX DD for $240 on Monday. Should make for a solid upgrade over the rx 480 and give me an excuse to finally upgrade to 1440p.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Please post your impressions, I'm still on an 8GB RX480 and TBH I find it hard to make a case for upgrading. I'm still at 1080p and don't intend to go to 1440p anytime soon.

Silly people. Now is the WORST time to buy a GPU. Both teams are about to launch cards at the same time. Its going to be a bloodbath.

I'm saving myself for whichever team drops the best 4K card before CP2077 drops. (insert CP2077 delay joke here)

I too own a RX480 and for the games I play, it does just fine at 4K. (WOW and Civ6)
