Somehow Adventure games feel a bit like cheating as it was far easier to have good graphics for mostly still background.

Quest for Glory is an RPG

These graphics are more closer to Day of The Tentacle rather than Sam and Max.
Speaking of DOTT, it's a beautiful game but it's story was rather barebones. I also found it to be a pretty boring game.

Don't worry, the comment wasn't related to the games you posted, else I would have quoted you.

Another selection of some of the best looking DOS games:

Teenage Queen (1988, Exxos)

I actually played a bit of this game, but I gave up cause I don't really know Chinese (I can read some hanzi though). BTW LoSaF's soundtrack is really awesome. The soundtrack has a bunch of decent songs.

Most DOS games are beautiful due to hand-drawn pixel art, and creative uses of limited palettes like EGA/CGA, and the plethora of adventure games that made copious use of drawn 2d backgrounds.

Space Quest 3 comes to mind.

My list would be: Prince of Persia, Volfied, Super Tetris (Spectrum Holobyte 1991), Prehistorik 2, Dave, Dave 2.

Prince of Persia 1 and Super Tetris have some decent graphics. Prehistorik 2's color choice is really done well though.

Looking at some of the games on this thread, I actually wanna play them.
I really want to play Legend of Sword and Fairy, some of the Sierra ADVs, MI 1&2, Sam and Max Hit the Road and Cruise for a Corpse 😀

Bitmap brothers had that strange unified Commodore64 pallette, steampunk look to all their games. I really liked/hated that.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

Interesting were Composite CGA graphics of the AGI titles.
The blurry, but "organic" looking graphics made things look more detailed than they really were.
Especially, if we consider that AGI engine was very low-res (like 160x200 pels ?) in order
to be portable across the limited home computer platforms of the day.
You know, these primitive platforms that were stuck to 320x240 pels, at best. 😉

Edit: The original Game Boy ('89) had a 160x144 pels screen resolution that comes close to AGI..
And four shades, just like CGA. Makes me wonder why Sierra games never got ported to GB platform.

Teenage Queen is interesting but don't check the Mobygames page if you don't want to be spoiled! Leave it to Exxos, and other French developers, to come up with weird or erotic games (preferably both combined)

Good idea by the way to start posting screenshots. It's a thread that's about good loooking games after all 😜

Here are some for the ones I suggested:

Archimedean Dynasty (1996, Massive Development GmbH)

(I'm not 100% sure the game runs on a 486. I will have to try it on my 486 with PCI because my other one doesn't have enough video memory)

SU-27 Flanker (1996, Flying Legends)

(Runs very well on a 486 DX4 120MHz, I'm really impressed with the resolution and detail of vehicles)

(I scaled the screenshots to 640x400 because you could barely see anything at 320x200. No idea why the thumbnails are different in size)

(Now that I look at it I wouldn't call this game "beautiful". It's more that the technology was impressive at the time)

Flight Unlimited yes, I remember it as being a "heavy" game (like Wing Commander 4 from around the same time). I will have to try EF 2000 again but I remember it as playable. Maybe my standards were different back then.

[edit]
I tried EF 2000 on my cacheless 486 DX4 and on "Low" global detail setting and "Medium" world detail ("Low" removes all terrain textures, which looks terrible) it was certainly playable. If you remove the cockpit and go into "fullscreen HUD view" it runs pretty well, even.

I'm sure it runs much better with L2 cache though because the game is very memory intensive (more so than any other DOS game I've ever played). Performance went way up when I turned off disk cache, freeing up 5 extra megabytes (of 16MB).

I'd almost forgotten about Inca! This game is gorgeous considering it was made in '92 and has a great soundtrack. It actually plays well on a 386 and lists 286 as minimum requirements.
