I think non-ref OCed 980 Ti will be faster than any OCed Titan. But not by more than 1-10% imo. So yeah, enthusiasts only. Does not really matter if you clock it or the factory. Binning plays some role, sure, but OCed 980 Ti should be generally faster than OCed Titans. These are just my assumptions from benchmarks I have seen floating online. Too bad we can't test it now, maybe some day!

I think that Titan existed primarily to collect extra cash by being much earlier on the market than those great non-ref 980 Tis. That and having tons of VRAM, which is useless for XP gaming and would be interesting only if you modded new games or did some specific professional work on the same machine.

Without going too off-topic I would like to say that CPU freq is more important than cores for gaming. Always pick CPU with highest clock (after OC) over cores. One should always water cool their CPUs and overclock them if possible - you can get even 30% better FPS if the game is bottlenecked by (any) CPU (i.e. simulator games and the like). There may be exceptions to this, but following this idea served me well so far.

I think that 8-core ivy xeon should overclock about as much as the average 4-core 3770k would, also the titan X has a more unlocked core than the 980ti, with more shaders and more texture mapping units, so it doesnt need to be clocked quite as high as the 980ti to perform as good. But if you're not interested in it, that just means less competition for me when I'm trying to get it 😉

With all that said, while I think these rare binned and overclocked titans should be at least as good as the average non-reference 980Ti, it would definitely be interesting to bench one against one of the rarer more overkill 980Tis like the MSI Lightning or the Evga K|NGP|N edition

A dual-core E8600 is already a very high-performance XP system. I3 or I5 Sandy/Ivy Bridge is extra overkill. Besides Alan Wake and Falcon 4.0, are there many games that truly take advantage of more than one core? Do people still have faith in hyperthreading?

I'm currently putting together a "new" daily driver for myself that will have an I5-3570 in it. My ultimate XP system that I put together for myself is a Phenom II X4 with a 560 Ti, but I'm thinking this I5 will be even more overkill for another XP build when I eventually retire it from daily service.

Someone supposedly has got a Fury X working with AMD XP iCafe drivers and an inf mod. Lost my source for that one.

I would love for someone to test a 780ti OC vs a 980ti OC/Titan X OC in XP.

Maxwell architecture is all about efficiency and optimization.
Considering the drivers are a bit of a hack for a GTX 960 on XP, some of these optimizations may not have been carried over if they need enabling in software drivers, especially for older games.
It also does not overclock very well and ended the advantage of premium overclocking cards unless the owner use LN2.

780Ti has a few more cores and an advantage in texture rate. It also scales almost linearly to 1400Mhz from stock GHZ spec. (If the card and cooling are up to it)
When the GTX 980 was released, it was not much of a speed bump but very efficient in comparison. However, with time the optimizations put Maxwell quite far ahead in most modern games.

I tested the 7970 6GB Vapour X and 780 TI Kingpin on XP and 8.1. No contest 780Ti, is twice as fast when overclocked in some games.

A guess but I would like for someone to prove right or wrong:
780 Ti OC++ (GK110, 2880) > Titan Black OC (GK110, 2880) > Titan X OC (GM200, 3072) > 980 Ti OC (GM200, 2816)> Titan (GK110, 2688) OC > 780 OC++ (GK110, 2304) > 980 OC (GM200, 2048) > 7970 OC
*For Windows XP Performance all overclocked

With the Fury X being the dark horse that could beat all with HBM, if it actually works in XP and is optimized enough. 😀

Very interesting about Fury X, someone should confirm if it works indeed. I've always wanted to do a R9 290X winXP/win7 dualboot build, but R9 290X not having any winXP drivers was a bummer.

Yeah quite a breakthrough if true. I notice the link has gone down from AMD.

I think I downloaded the driver and stashed it away somewhere.. I will upload them for someone wants to try (if I find it).

In that msfn thread, the guy who mentioned getting R9 Fury working on XP with it, in 2016 post, I see later in 2020 has posted about having had problems with it and it not being worth it

Over the years I realised that bios is what depends on GPU to work on card's .

It doesn't worth to take risk . R9 Fury used to bsod with icafe driver many times .

I did see that. I guess any kind of 3d acceleration working with a Fury or Hawaii series in XP is good news.

Maybe those issues could be worked out, maybe not but won't know till someone else has a crack at it.

Hello guys, im planning to build a xp 32 bit pc, for play some 2004-2005 fps online games

I have a z77 platform, and ive ordered a gtx 970.

My question is, whats the best driver 344.11 or 368.81?

Becouse i have a 1920x1080 240hz monitor with only display port and hdmi...
Will it work? At least 144hz?

The game im gonna play is directx 8

144hz should work fine with displayport at a max of 1080p on XP.
If you want scaling then use the 355.98 or older drivers. If not then use the latest.
Some games will try to use the max refresh rate of your monitor so use RefreshLock or similar or switch to a SD/HD resolution which limits the max refresh rate to 60hz when you want to play those games.

Becouse also for the 344.11 i find multiple drivers but with different size, dont know wich is right!!
So you say better use the latest and not 344.11?

Do you know why is that? Is that maybe you hitting the DVI bandwidth limits?

Single-link DVI maxes out at 165MHz. Dual-link at 330MHz.

1440x1080@144Hz is ~266MHz.

it's happening with displayport, so it wouldn't be a bandwidth limitation, particularly since its already doing 1920x1080 at 144. Its mostly because the "custom resolution" feature is grayed out and "gpu scaling" is completely missing, you can make a custom res with a registry edit but I cant figure out how to assign 144hz to the custom res when made that way, so it just stays 60, also with no gpu scaling it ends up stretching across the monitor anyways. The issue only happens with the XP drivers, under win7 theres no problems with creating a custom 1440x1080 at 144 res and enabling gpu scaling, its the XP drivers that are problematic. AMD doesn't have that issue.

So I went with adding a CRT, with maxwell being the final cards that support analog output (with dvi to vga adapter) its kinda interesting to use them with CRT anyways. So I can get 1600x1200 at 100hz with the correct colors and aspect ratio and everything. CRT set to primary display under XP, LCD disabled, and LCD primary display under w7, CRT disabled. Looks like it's either this or going for AMD

Oh, that's a bummer. I only have lower res 60Hz LCD monitors, do you think I could reproduce it there? Regarding scaling, have you seen this thread and the suggestion by ruthan:

Add an old mid-high end quadro in the system alongside the 980 Ti if you have one. Install Quadro drivers and sometimes that unlocks the higher AA for all cards.
Not sure if it persists if you remove the quadro but leave the quadro drivers installed.
